Do you think this just happens by accident?

Fits and starts… the lack of consistency keeps killing UW. No reason UW can’t be a top tier legit contender every year. To get there, we need consistent quality leadership. That’s it.

James → Lambo → Neuheisel → Gilby → Ty → Sark → Pete → Jimmy → DeBoer → Fisch

Too inconsistent to be a consistent winner. Despite all of this, the program continues to make playoffs, win NYD bowls, NC game, etc. That’s why you can demand excellence.
When you look at the hires post Ty UW seems to care considering Sark is a highly regarded coach now, Pete will be in the hof, Jimmy was fired as fast as possible, Deboer won big, and Fisch TBD but he wasnt a lazy or uninspired hire and they might fire him if he sucks
Four out of the last five coaches UW hired were simply the best options who would take the job. Unfortunately the one time we made the one mistake and took the easy hire was when we were best positioned for long-term success and probably in a position to find someone who was both good and interested in being in Seattle long-term since we knew for maybe two whole years Petersen was burning out.
I don't think it was a common perception for two years that Pete was burning out. When I speculated that he was burning out in 2018 I was met with numerous hostile or irritated posts/PMs.
Sending irritated PMs is pretty gay.

It's worth mentioning that in the apple cup preview show last year, Petersen specifically said he was 'slipping' or using a word to imply that he was just simply not as good of a coach anymore and wasn't going to be happy to continue to win 7/8 games. Burnout is probably a hug contributor to that, but he never explicitly said he was tired of coaching or UW or anything. He was simply not as good at his job and had the ability to step away which most people don't, is what I took from that interview.

When Babs hired Neuheisel away from the Buffs for roughly $1 mill. per in '99, he was one of the highest paid HCs in the nation.

After Rick took them to the cleaners in court, UW upper campus got gun shy, and have been ever since, when it comes to paying coaches top dollar. I think it's due to multiple factors, but IMHO one of the major reasons is because the university/city/community has become increasingly more PC. TITTT.

People forget Ohio State wanted to kill granny for the sake of playing football in 2020. I don't see how you make Seattle culture into Ohio State culture, which I guess makes me a low expectations, cuckold loser. TITTT.

There's a difference between having high expectations and being delusional.
There's only 4 places on Mt Rushmore and UW has never been there and never will be unless Bill Gates quits being a fucking dweeb. Money, tradition, and location as they say.
The gold standard at UW is Don James level football which never was 25 years of 1 or 2 loss seasons.
And here it is
We can't
Why?
Well we can't
I was on the only team where we're on a college sports Mt Rushmore. I know about winning and stuff.
You were on the UW softball team?

In the past 30 years, there have been exactly 1.5 natties from 2024 Blue States. USC in 2002 and 2003.

Alabama has had one of the best dynasties in sports during that time so definitely tilts it and are Florida and Michigan red? And aren't most college towns blue?

Ohio State played 9 games in 2020. UW played 3? Bucks made the natty and lost to Bama
The SEC owns natties since 96 so I'm not sure how that disproves the point. If there is one
From 1920 to 1990 the Midwest and Pacific coast dominated football
Except for 1926 dammit

There's not that many coaches that could have feasibly won a natty in the past decade and Washington has had 2 of them. Petersen got burned out sure but that gets brought up an unfair amount considering what he did for the program.

And I'm not sure what you mean by 4 of the 5 being the best that would come here. That's a good thing?
Petersen was never winning a natty with that offense.

Back in the 1980s UW had a season ticket waiting list of something like 5,000, even with the Seahawks being all the rage regionally. In the 1990s, more than one media person called the UW and its fan base a Pac-10 school with an SEC fanbase. Its possible we've gone too soft and PC, but we do have a history

@SECDAWG! True???

As much as I'd love to dunk on the Oregon Rose Bowl thing - they won at Ohio State with a young CJ Stroud at QB and went toe to toe last year in their home stadium and found a way to win. We jumped directly to the GREATEST DEFENSIVE OFF ALL TIME line which 75% of the time when I feel like we do that after a loss like that said defense goes out and gives up 38 to Minnesota.
At the moment they're are much closer to Ohio State than we are. We see how this season plays out.

That was before half of the student body became international and out-of-staters. No, I will not take it to the Tug.
