The Knowledge’s 🏀 UW hoops mega thread

Saw some Huggins talk earlier in the thread, so I'd thought I'd share a story. (Hopefully a nice distraction from what a shit show our hoops team is).

I was at a Nike coach's clinic in Portland sometime in the late '90s/early 2000's, at the time when Huggins was doing well at Cincinnati. Huggins was scheduled to speak about his offensive scheme in the late afternoon. The speaker before him was Lute Olson, who was probably the single most boring individual I've ever encountered.

After Olson spoke and nearly put the 250 coaches in attendance to sleep, Huggins took the stage and before Olson could even leave the speakers platform, Huggins started making jokes to the crowd about how boring it was to have to listen to Olson speak. He looked at the guys from Nike that were sitting next to the stage and told them that he would never attend another coaching clinic if he had to speak after Lute. At first, it seemed like schtick, but it was clear, as Olson stormed off stage, that it was NOT schtick. Olson walked the length of the conference room to the exit, while Huggins continued to mock him from the podium. It was brutal. Then, it got even worse.

Huggins was schedule for 90 minutes (if I remember correctly) and for the entire 90 minutes he told stories about how stupid his players were. By name. It was funny, but in a shockingly uncomfortable way. I think he called out every kid on his team and gave an example of how dumb they were. He never said a word about his offense; he just told profanity laced stories and made fun of the guys he coached. (As some people can do, he did make the use of the words "f*ck", "f*cker" and "motherf*cker" an art form).

After he spoke, we had a dinner break and as I walked through the conference center/hotel, I bumped into him on the way back to my room. We gave each other a nod, and I said hello to him. The odor of alcohol was so strong that I was concerned about getting a contact buzz.

I'm told by the honey-do list fags here that nobody wants that and that we should peapatch the program though.
pea patch badminton and water polo or basically pick your Olympic sport

oh wait, I forgot that women's sports are completely equal, the Seattle echo chamber hags told us so

Baseball and beach volleyball, and to an extent trnnis stand out to me as sports that should go before basketball but whose knows, maybe we don't spend shit on to show sports as it is.

We? definitely want a successfull basketball program.

UW should try to have a good basketball program. If you could give me some kind of trade of pea patching the program to directly put that money into football I'd take it but that's not reality. It also doesn't seem that fucking hard to have a basketball program that at the very least can realistically compete to make the NCAA Tournament as a power conference team. I also don't think this is a case where UW made obvious bad decisions or something. I really couldn't tell you why not only Sprinkle hasn't worked out, but hasn't worked out so damn much to the point you need to fire him after year two.

Every former PAC 12 team got their shit pushed in, to be fair.

The men love to bitch and complain but the women, playing in the same buildings, taking the same long flights are killing the B10 in basketball. UCLA is about to go undefeated in league. USC won the league last year. UW is about to make the NCAA tournament for the second straight year. The best P12 men’s program the last 30 years is Arizona. They’d win the B10 this year. Just like UCLA and USC women did. UCLA men just aren’t super athletic, UW and Oregon were destroyed by injuries. USC, kinda like UW wasted some money on portal busts. It’s been a mess on the men’s side for sure but it’s not travel, it’s mismanagement.

It's a guess but I think the West Coast SJWs make women's basketball more of a priority than Midwest people. Similar to how we heard incessantly about how the women got double the medals the men got when maybe three countries really take women's field hockey or whatever seriously

No dude, middled aged guys with Iowa shit on were all over during Clark's run on college. It 100% wasn't just a west coast fad with women's basketball. That being said I don't consume it and don't think UW should be spending 5+ mil on it.

It's a fair poont and I would never argue that the Big 10 was better than the Pac-12 in basketball for a long time. The Pac-12 hasn't won the title since 97. That's 30 years and has only had a handful of final four teams since then too. Something just hasn't lined up with west coast basketball in a long time.

B10 is in a 25 year drought. They have had more final 4 teams than the West Coast schools in that time frame. Gonzaga two or three times and UCLA three times are all I can think of.

San Diego State in 2023 and Arizona in 2001.

Gonzaga got fucked by Covid in 2020 - that was arguably their best team.
Forgot about Gonzaga being fucked by covid in 2020. Oregon made the final four one year maybe two in there (it's more fun to guess than look up). They almost beat North Carolina who won the title. I'll always remember that one because I was in a restaurant in Seqoia and the goofy guy at the table next to me told his date that he was really into Oregon sports while that game was going on. Huh?

Arizona got fucked by the wefs maybe the worst I've ever seen in 2001. Gilbert Arenas also may have been hungover.

UW not making it in 2005 or 06 was a huge black eye on Romar.

The Seahawks fan or Duck fan going around town in their gear running errands (that can be done almost any time) while one of those teams is actually playing never gets old for me.
