The Throbber cringes when Mrs Throbber v2.0 says she’s going grocery shopping at Trader Joe’s. That means she is loading up on kale and other nonsensical food with no taste and you’re still hungry at the end of the meal.

They do have some good candy so it’s a score if she brings home the dark chocolate covered toffee.

But yeah TJ is for fags.

Yes like Natural Grocers it's attractive to women that want the snacks and a bunch of kids shit.
If I choose to go into a grocery store at all, which is rare, I go to New Seasons and walk out having spent 60$ on beer, hot bar food and coffee.

It is only if you do a bulk of your grocery shopping there. The produce and dairy sections are twash. But there is some magic in some of the other parts of the store. The magic of Trader Joe’s is they find an exceptional product, like a specialty sauce, and copy it. Their sauces are legit. General Tsos, Carolina BBQ, Curry, all great, and you can’t find that shit anywhere else. They have other great stuff too.
 
TJs meat section is slightly above convenience store quality.

Their frozen aisle is actually pretty solid.

The Throbber also likes some of their bakery stuff even though none of it is made in store. Their chiabatta bread is solid and their chocolate cake is goddamned delicious.
 
Yes, Trader Joes (coming soon to CDA!) is best for a few specific items, not for the entire grocery trip. We like the frozen meals - the wife and I work full time and have a kid in volleyball, sometimes heating up the tikka masala or bulgogi beef from Trader Joes is the best we are going to get on a weeknight.
 
The Bellingham Trader Joes averages about 250 customers at any given time. The parking lot houses roughly six and a half cars. There is no food product worth that nightmare.

I don't have a Trader Joe's beef, per se, but I don't think they are worth much as a grocery store other than some snacky type stuff. The produce and meat sucks ass. Terrible, terribly pre marinated tri-tips for example.
My rotation is basically Costco for all the items (there's over 50 of them) we go through in bulk. Safeway for regular shit we don't buy in bulk at Costco. And then Newport Market (West Bend's premier fancy pants grocer) is my go to for the higher end stuff and fresh, pre-made stuff (amazing meatloaf) .
 
Trader Joe's founder was quoted once as saying the target audience is the "intellectual poor." That is, people with shitty degrees who are poor, but think highly of themselves because they went to college. College grads who can't afford Whole Foods. A lot of the shit labeled trader joes is mass produced by other companies and put in trader joes boxes. Pretty common with a lot of products. Was told the frozen orange chicken at TJ's was good, and admittedly, it is. Saw the costco version, tastes and prepares exactly the same. I'm 99% certain its the same product. TJ fans will swear the TJ version is better for you.

I was a big Whole Foods guy is Seattle cause the one off Roosevelt was close to our house. I've always felt that if you're buying in bulk at Costco then the quality of Whole Foods negates the negligible price increase over Safeway (not that big of a difference I found).
One of the things that sucks about Bend is that Whole Foods is way out on the East Side (15 min drive for me) where all the pours live. It make no sense. All the rich ass MILFs are west of the Deschutes by me.
Oh and fuck QFC. Most overpriced shitty grocery stores of all time.
