The Costco thread

Trader Joe's founder was quoted once as saying the target audience is the "intellectual poor." That is, people with shitty degrees who are poor, but think highly of themselves because they went to college. College grads who can't afford Whole Foods. A lot of the shit labeled trader joes is mass produced by other companies and put in trader joes boxes. Pretty common with a lot of products. Was told the frozen orange chicken at TJ's was good, and admittedly, it is. Saw the costco version, tastes and prepares exactly the same. I'm 99% certain its the same product. TJ fans will swear the TJ version is better for you.
I was a big Whole Foods guy is Seattle cause the one off Roosevelt was close to our house. I've always felt that if you're buying in bulk at Costco then the quality of Whole Foods negates the negligible price increase over Safeway (not that big of a difference I found).
One of the things that sucks about Bend is that Whole Foods is way out on the East Side (15 min drive for me) where all the pours live. It make no sense. All the rich ass MILFs are west of the Deschutes by me.
Oh and fuck QFC. Most overpriced shitty grocery stores of all time.
You shop at Safeway and QFC is shitty? Safeway is twash.
QFC and Safeway are shitty, but QFC charges like 20% more for the same shit.
I only shop as Safeway for the shit that is the same wherever you buy it.
This is my fancy pants, quality grocer. You've probably driven by it.

Rosauers, Yokes and Super 1 are all better than the shitty Kroger/Albertsons corporate chains in this thread.

War URM.

That's where we shopped when we stayed in town there. Great beer selection.

Fantastic beer selection for a smallish store. Plus they have an in-store liquor shoppe which is un heard of in Oregon.

QFC is overpriced Fred Meyer. Hope that helps. I 'member when the QFC in UVillage was small, and even at that time, overpriced. BTW, the nutritional value of ones apple from Whole Foods and the apple at Safeway is, the same. The price is higher because the yield is lower. Oh and they are still spraying it with 'organic' pesticides. Whatever helps one sleep at night.

going back to Weber grills. I have owned this grill for 27 years. Replaced the flavorizer bars a few times. The igniter and burner tubes once. This thing is a champ and they don’t make them like this anymore. If you are in the market for a new grill, buy used off Facebook marketplace or Offer Up. Then just buy new parts for it. Paint the outside with high temp paint.

If I see an old Weber for free or dirt cheap, I will grab it and refurb it and flip it There are guys out there who make old Webers look like museum pieces

mine is 19 years old. Original ignition system and burner tubes. I’ve been about 4 sets of flavor bars and upgraded to the cast iron grates. Bullet proof.

For sure. The old ones are bullet proof. Like a Camry or an Accord.

Here is Genesis Silver C I refurbed. Picked it up $29 bucks. Tore it down. I could have gone bare metal on the grill box and got it to shine, but the goal was to get 20 years of grime the previous owner neglected to clean. I may turn it into a Blackstone or flip it next Spring.

Propane ignition burner in my Weber has the coals ready in 15 minutes while prepping whatever is going on. If it's a steak I'm either cooking over charcoal or in a cast iron skillet.

@El_K I’ll buy you a case of beer if you come clean this shit up for me
If was was closer I would pick it up and take it on.
you can mask off the table and controls and paint the end caps.
and you can paint the back and cleans things up.
just use some high temp enamel paint like this

A razor blade scraper works very well on the interior lid getting off that grease that has turned into chipped paint And a spackle like scraper will get the big chunks If you really want to dig into it, a drill with a metal brush or an angle grinder

img-1019.jpeg

And you can do the same to the emblem. Paint it down and use some sand paper and steel wool to get the raise letters back to where they were. Some guys paint the logo red.

I believe so. I have seen people customize those old tailgater grills that attached to a tow hitch receiver

here is a grill that they no longer make, the Margaritaville tailgate grill. Here it is in purple.

Look, pal, no one here loves a long slow charcoal cook on a Weber Kettle grill than Yella. But quick ignition or not they are a lot more labor intensive- i.e., dumping in the charcoal and removing the ash. And this is especially more of pain in the winter months in a place like Seattle.
If I'm in a hurry to cook some brats or chicken or burgers, propane to me is fine. Plus my grill is almost 20 years old and well seasoned with build up shit that ads to the flavor!!
