Living in the past thread

Johnson's biggest and most irreplaceable value was picking up blitzes. He would've helped a lot against Michigan. Our OL wasn't pushed around so much as they were bewildered about who was coming where and they were just whiffing. Johnson compensated for that all year when healthy.

But it wouldn't have made enough of a difference based on what I saw. Michigan scored every time they needed to.

Michigan scored more in 1 quarter, twice, than UW scored in the game.
details/smetails

Game simply came down to this

Our front 5 couldn't block their 4 so Penix didn't have that half second extra he enjoyed all year, and by end of game he was seeing ghosts in pocket

Our front 4 couldn't stand up to their 5 OL. No shade, during that Harbaugh 3 year run few teams could.

Remember we got our only tf on a short field b/c Harbaugh got cute and went for it pn 4th from midfield late 2q. If he just punts it and forces us to go 80 plus I don't think we could have.

I don't remember Michigan blitzing that much

He also wasn’t a serial rapist.

Yes. And this is a Fisch’s best shot to coach in NFL. Go take an OC job and see what happen. Problem is Fisch isn’t Ben Johnson.
If McVey or Shanahan were to hire him as “OC” he’d get a shot at a head coaching job. Anyone who holds their jocks for a couple seasons gets a hard look at the big chair.

The 30 something’s that have no history of failing in the NFL get those chances. Jedd who is 49 but looks 65 won’t.

Robert Salah is 47. He just held Shanahans hand for a couple seasons and now he’s head coaching again. Yes, on defense, I know. I can’t remember, was his time in New York as head coach good?

An additional problem for Fisch is the television.

Folks have seen his "work" and how well it "worked" against good teams this year (not very well).

Having the defense give up 34 wasn't abnormal that year. The Occam's razor of that game was the oline pass blocking didn't step up and Penix ran out of the magic he had against Texas which I think is among the best QB CFB performances I've ever seen
Well, whenever you give up 300 on the ground it's tough to do hypotheticals, but there was an inflexion point in the game I recall on a Washington 3rd down or whatever that I remember telling myself, "that's gonna hurt."

It always helps to be balanced on offense. No doubt about that. I'm never happy when all my team can do is throw and the defense knows you can't run.
