I think the program winning one game in 2004 and zero in 2008 had something to do with that. Plus a shitload of mediocrity surrounding all of those.
We had some good history no doubt. It's just quite on the level of, say, 2012- 2024 Ohio State History.Back in the 1980s UW had a season ticket waiting list of something like 5,000, even with the Seahawks being all the rage regionally. In the 1990s, more than one media person called the UW and its fan base a Pac-10 school with an SEC fanbase. Its possible we've gone too soft and PC, but we do have a historyPeople forget Ohio State wanted to kill granny for the sake of playing football in 2020. I don't see how you make Seattle culture into Ohio State culture, which I guess makes me a low expectations, cuckold loser. TITTT.When Babs hired Neuheisel away from the Buffs for roughly $1 mill. per in '99, he was one of the highest paid HCs in the nation.
After Rick took them to the cleaners in court, UW upper campus got gun shy, and have been ever since, when it comes to paying coaches top dollar. I think it's due to multiple factors, but IMHO one of the major reasons is because the university/city/community has become increasingly more PC. TITTT.
YVBEAs much as I'd love to dunk on the Oregon Rose Bowl thing - they won at Ohio State with a young CJ Stroud at QB and went toe to toe last year in their home stadium and found a way to win. We jumped directly to the GREATEST DEFENSIVE OFF ALL TIME line which 75% of the time when I feel like we do that after a loss like that said defense goes out and gives up 38 to Minnesota.
At the moment they're are much closer to Ohio State than we are. We see how this season plays out.

yes, the state of WA has gone to shit. Too many PC ass hats running around looking for the next sign to pick up and be upset about. Huh?I'm down here breading 6'9" kids and spending money on youth sports ball like a drunken sailor and you guys are talking to me about "voluntary low expectations"?Your above post is an example of voluntarily lowered expectations of the possible. - Joseph Stalin

Good point and articulates a perception I have whenever I get on the boards after a UW loss. You, Race, Knowledge, Snow and many others are pretty cold at assessing what is and isn't the case. Superfans who emote over these things - and there are a few in this thread - often go right to anointing the team as GOAT and it reeks of coping. That's the "it's right around the corner" crowd. As much as I'd love to dunk on the Oregon Rose Bowl thing - they won at Ohio State with a young CJ Stroud at QB and went toe to toe last year in their home stadium and found a way to win. "Your very best effort." IOW, good post, and it was. I have always found the Miami fanbase to be pretty stupid and for years myopically stuck in the past with a vocabulary of one word: swag. But even they seem to have gotten more realistic about who they really are in the last 5 to 10 years. Maybe I'm wrong but the 15th ass kicking at the hands of Clemson coupled with annual losses to Georgia Tech and/or UVa have done their work and at some point they seem to have become realistic. Gotta admit you have a problem before you can fix it.
UW has had some good things happen to it in the last decade - Petersen, Cornerback U and Penix and the 3-headed posse among them. More good things can still happen. To become Buck, though, requires a jump from where they are and what they have been since the early 90s. One year here and there they can be that but to become the annual monster Buck is requires a lot of shit to line up. Not sure I have the formula but I go back to what I think is an Iron Law: you need a little luck in the coaching hire.
I'm just a pessimist, low expectations loser I suppose. I think it's really HARD for a school, city, region, etc, to escape the gravitational pull of historical inertia. UW has never been a true blue blood, but rather a very solid Tier II program (i.e., top 20 all time) who can occasionally play with the best when we get lucky with the right coach and other circumstances.Good point and articulates a perception I have whenever I get on the boards after a UW loss. I believe all of that. He's still Judas in that instead of reeling some of that in he instead took the football program out back and shot it.Gerb was a good university Pres though. I interacted with him a time or two as an undergrad. Classic academis egghead.
He had some alumni pressure about the football team that didn't get a lot of press. Back in the late 80s and early 90s the football team was causing some problems on campus and in the U District. I can recite some examples, but suffice it to say there were some rough dudes playing for Washington. Quietly, Gerbs was hearing from some big boosters of the school to deal with what was becoming a bit of a side show.
Just trying to keep it a little real here lest this place become fagman.com.
Wisconsin isn’t anywhere near Washington’s league historically.Dude Wisconsin is a very solid Tier II program. Wisconsin would never, ever get to a 4 team playoff and a title game.
