Last went to Cancun right after I graduated high school. Lived it up the first night at the old Senor Frogs. Someone gave me the great idea of taking the slide into the lagoon. Landed in knee deep filth and got plastic bags stuck to me. Later read the lagoon has crocs in it so probably lucky I made it out.
Was sargassum piling up on beaches? I know the hotels there have to rake it daily. About 10 years ago, I stayed at Paradise Lodge near the Belize border and it was piled 4 ft high on the beach. Didn't affect the flyfishing as we stayed inside bays and targeted bones, permit, and tarpon on the flats. But holy hell did that sargassum smell to high heavens.

It was definitely piling up and there were dudes out on the beach daily with wheelbarrows hauling it off.
Sargassum was real bad in Tulum when I was there in October. I think it's usually way worse in the fall season but it smelled terrible and there were giant piles of it and the water was red on stormier days. Not that cool.
My idiot family member pressured us to go to cancun years ago, I knew it would suck, I bitched before during and after, and to top it all off I was on medication that nearly killed me there and after the flight back. Almost no golf, certainly no drinking, on a fucking resort more than half the time.
I'd go back to charred over Maui over that place.
