It definitely wasn't in 2022.
Russia's initial push was about as big of a disaster as it could've been. PGOS at the Russian helm and this shit ends in March 2022.
Putin's generals half assed the gameplan looking for an easy win and hiding the playbook for the away game @ NATO next week, and instead got mopped by FCS Ukraine.
No one, especially Russia, thought that over two years later Russia would be losing 30k troops for an insignificant border village and calling it a major victory. Ukraine literally sent Russian defectors into Russia to shoot up some cops and border guards.
It's a fucking shitshow and I have 0 problem with the US helping Ukraine out.
Russia has never been very good about making friends via diplomacy with their neighbors.
There is an alternate reality where competent people are in charge and the USSR post WW2 surpasses America on the global scale.
Instead we have the equivalent of the US invading Mexico, losing the battle for Mexico City and Juarez, but oh wait we captured Tiajuana we are mighty and strong!
Everyone should agree to a ceasefire now and call it a day. But Russia wants to keep throwing lives away for some muddy hovels and a coca-cola factory in bumfuck nowhere.

While we were trying to stuff Ukraine into NATO and the Ukraine was still actively trying to take back territory that Russia occupied. Then we lied and told people that it was about democracy. When the dementia patient is trying to maximize Russia's oil revenue by chocking off US production and our southern border is open, I'm not all in on fixing Ukraine just like we fixed South Vietnam, Libya, Afghanistan and Iraq. Toss in our government working with Iran so they get nukes and hundreds of billions of dollars. I'm still waiting for PGOS's wish list about how this ends beyond whatever it costs and however long it takes. Should Israel let Iran get nukes?
