Here's what it said.
"credible reports of: enforced disappearance; torture and cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment; harsh and life-threatening prison conditions; arbitrary arrest or detention; serious problems with the independence of the judiciary; restrictions on freedom of expression, including for members of the media, including violence or threats of violence against journalists, unjustified arrests or prosecutions of journalists, and censorship.”
The State Department also cited Ukraine for “serious restrictions on internet freedom; substantial interference with the freedoms of peaceful assembly and association; restrictions on freedom of movement; serious government corruption; extensive gender-based violence; systematic restrictions on workers’ freedom of association; and the existence of the worst forms of child labor.”
Zelensky has also banned elections and outlawed peace talks with Russia.

Canceling elections and banning opposition parties from ballots is the best approach I can think of when I’m trying to sell the Defend Democracy excuse to cynics.

Providing Ukraine with weapons and intel to do the fighting and dying themselves is the morally right thing to do and well worth the tax dollars, and it also serves as a deterrent to Russia and China in the future. The line in the sand was crossed. If Russia was successful here, all the former USSR countries not in NATO would follow, and then eventually NATO itself would be attacked.

Sometimes you have to nip shit in the bud and costs now prevent exponentially costs in the future. Get it? Probably not, so fuck off. You guys are retards on this topic.

For some reason he doesn’t understand this basic principle of the “democracy” he thinks is being defended in Ukraine. Limiting other viewpoints by banning them is the opposite of a real democracy.
Communists have run for office in the United States. If the people voted them into office, that’s the result of “democracy.” Canceling elections for whatever excuse as nightclubs flourish in Kyiv isn’t “democracy.”
If you support those in control of the government banning opponents from ballots, that’s cool and honest, but stop pretending that has anything to do with “protecting democracy” because that’s simply a lie.

One day we will be asked HOW Ukraine is supposed to fight Russia and recover lost territory, like we know the best military strategy. It's not unlike the question about HOW we're going to become less reliant on fossil fuels over the next few decades. It's a deflection. The truth of the situations and the need for a solution need to be accepted before any further discussion. If not, there will never be a solution. And any discussion we do have in here is all bullshit anyway because none of us know the definitive answers. The nuance of this is lost in here. Denial of problems and and an inability to see past their noses, let alone years into the future, is commonplace. Maintenance fees are required to help prevent even the POSSIBILITY of something happening down the road. This is what security is. So you don't pay a larger price later. The analogies are endless.
Even that question is less of a deflection than asking why nightclubs are open, however.
