In many cases, probably most cases, opponents of the death penalty are pro-criminal. In your case, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and you are just wrong. The vast majority of death penalty criminals fight to their last breadth to avoid the death penalty. Your premise for them is wrong.
They used to hang criminals in the public square as as a deterrent because most criminals don't want to die. We have a huge crime problem in this country "fighting" crime the "compassionate" way. Hanging the latest public killers in a few months, the sweet Luigi and the illegal who just burned up an innocent American on the NY subway, would definitely bring home that copy cat killers might think twice and definitely would bring some real justice to the families who had loved ones horribly murdered. Bonus points in that dead criminals don't commit more crimes.
Good thing that jails work so well that no crimes are committed in jail. That killer's don't kill in jail. That rapists don't rape in jail. That serial rapists aren't released and rape and kill again.
Hmm, some people choose to have a respect for life and believe in a higher power. Not trying to be sanctimonious, but that's my belief. I used to be 100% in favor of the death penalty. Probably as recent as a couple years ago.

This, no need for the state to take lives if citizens are allowed to handle it.
Actually, that is why the state should take lives. Gets rid of the lynching and the tribal warfare. But the historical lesson is if the state doesn't do it's job, then it will digress to the citizens.
Quite arguably one of the biggest mistakes of the 20th century is surrendering such decisions of justice to large states.
You eliminated the small number of unjust deaths in small communities with such wonders as the killing fields.
But I digress, a deeper argument for another thread.
If living in prison for the rest of your life when you have been given the death penalty is so bad, why don't you explain why the criminals all fight to stay in prison instead of a pine box? This argument doesn't hold water.
Well, they ended up in jail so it certainly didn't deter them from committing the crime in the first place. Most people are not comfortable with death.
