The closest we got to a real audit was in Arizona. Only thing off limits were the machine passwords and an official canvassing of voters. Essentially all that matters.

You would need a list of ballots returned before counting and logged in and secured with sign offs. You would need a list of the vote counts. They should match. No ballots counted which were not logged in at secure site at the close of the polls. No postmarks. County has to have the ballots. No signature dates after the election day. Makes it tough to find ballots. No ballot harvesting. Clean voter rolls. All opposed by our mythical MBA. End vote by push mail.

Mail-in ballots aren't going anywhere. Easiest fix to give everyone their mail-in drug, is to stop using the mail, put scanners on drop boxes, scan in ID, then scan ballot, door opens. Post pickup audit that the counts match the scans and the scans match the underlying ballot.
