I was pretty damn lucky to grow up skiing there in the 80s, 90s and early 2000s during the golden era. @rodmansrage got there too fucking late just in time for late stage capitalism, public company skiing.

On a skiing side note, anyone else watch Full Circle on Netflix? Its about the parallels between Barry Corbet (Mid Century Bad Ass) and Trevor Kennison, both of whom had debilitating spinal cord injuries. Pretty inspiring.

I remember when people said skiing was a rich man's sport, and that was when it was a quarter of the cost it is today. Very depressing. I started late and caught the tail end of Stevens offering $20 night passes, 3 day passes for $99, $60 all-day, etc.
 
It's true, I turned down Mrs. Doog Bots cousin beefstick for skiing in the Poconos.

Skiing an unblemished and empty deer valley in the 90's was peak @UW_Doog_Bot powder run.

Only place that could still compare is out in Medicine Bow. Snowy range is a 10th the size but still empty and affordable on any given weekday that isn't a bank holiday.
 
I hate to say it but, hitting the slopes has become the new golf. It’s a rich man’s game. Having skied Oregon/Washington for the better part of 3 decades, the lift tix are outrageous now. I’ll always have a soft spot for Hoodoo having worked there a couple of seasons long ago. Best budget skiing in the NW. Batch was great back in the 90’s, had a great discount run on swap days. Willy Pass was good too, Meadows, before the onslaught of Portland came.
Haven’t hit the sticks in the last 10 years after both knees said enough is enough. I always admired the guy who rode the lift around the bull wheel and rode it down, flask in hand. Some days the spirits were just better than the powder.

Yes and no I'd say @NookTunnelSyndrome. My total 2023- 24 ski budget for a family of 4 (2 adults and a kids aged 6 and 9) which includes the following:
1 Adult Bachelor Season Pass for me
4 Day Pass for Mrs Snow
2 Kids Season Passes
2 x Season Rental Packages for Kids
Gas for 20 - 22 round trips to the ski hill
Is about $2,500 give or take. So, well within budget for an upper middle class household and even doable for true middle class if you're frugal. But skiing is 30 mins from my driveway so no lodging, airfare, and we skipped lessons this year due to sports ball conflicts.
