Will Latu, 2021 3* LB, Spanaway (Bethel), WA (Committed)

Curious if Latu is clearly a step below the other guys we've offered in our eyes, or if him being such a UW lean they're just waiting given that he will likely commit soon after being offered.

He's right up there with them. Recently ran a 4.57 40 at 225 pounds. That was timed by FSP I believe, so not official, but he's a great athlete and elite ILB prospect. The hold up for the UW offer is just grades. UW wants him and he obviously wants to be a Dawg. Just needs to keep working on his grades which he is doing. It's nice to see an elite in-state kid be openly passionate about UW, understand their standards and recruiting approach, and actually put in the work to EARN an offer instead of taking the easy way out and going to a lesser academic school. That's what an OKG does.

Like I said before, 2021 class is loaded at ILB. Somehow Bob Gregory is going to be in a position in which he's gonna have to turn down 4-star ILB talent because we won't have room to take them all. That's what happens when the program starts selling itself.

Keith Brown 4*
Trey Reynolds Unranked, likely 4*
Ethan Calvert 4* Top 100
Will Latu 4*
Julien Simon 5* Ath Top 100

UW will have their pick of who they want out of those 5 guys.

You’re doogin hard SAC... kinda gave me a partial chubby

The other potential option is not knowing what position ... we don’t seem to recruit athletes blindly often if at all

I don't think generic "athletes" really exist by the time we get close to signing day. Some programs will see Simon as a RB, some will see him on defense, but everyone will have a specific vision to sell him on.

We've recruited numerous players where other programs were recruiting them at different positions or even the other side of the ball.

I don’t care what other teams are doing

When was the last time we recruited somebody without being clear the position that we were recruiting at?

We don’t mislead kids saying that they want to play one position and then blindly move them. You could argue this is part of what went down with Harrison.

You can also debate whether you agree with the approach ... but that’s Pete’s approach.

I'm not saying to lie to him, I'm saying you tell him "we like you at a number of different spots, we want you on the team, we'll figure the position out later."

Then if you fill up at LB you put him at RB or BTE or edge or whatever the fuck other position you want to put him at. Kids like this don't come around often. Get him in the program.

We literally have told tons of defensive players that we could see them at buck. Or secondary played are recruited as defensive backs But not defined as safeties or cbs.

I get your point but that ain’t what Pete’s exhibited he does

Because those positions (DBs) are typically more flexible

Isn't that what he did with Joyner?

Pretty sure Joyner said he didn’t want to play RB and wanted to play DB

Ah I had it backwards then. Thought Joyner insisted on RB.

Joyner committed to Sark way early as a RB.

Then he opened it back up around the time Sark left and he also decided he wanted to be a DB.

Committed to WSU as a DB.

CP kept stubbornly recruiting him as a RB.

Ironically I remember Austin saying stuff about longevity and damage that RBs take.

Then in the last couple months we backed down and flipped him as a DB.

We did keep to that promise obviously even though many wanted him to be moved.

That’s whoregons strategy

Ektard says that someone close to the Latu recruitment says UW is close to offering him. The source expects UW to offer before the end of summer.

Any word on his big bro, Peter? I'd hate to see him stick with that O commitment.

Seems he still needs to get his grades up.

Eklund says no chance they offer his brother. Someone asked if it's because of academics and/or "fit". His response was "yeah, let's say that"

To add, his brother had a really weird interview with the Oregon version of Eklund. He said hes "riding with Oregon right now" but will take official visits and Oregon will probably be one of them.

He may be less committed than that Avanta guy who is releasing his top 7

They don't have commits till they sign. It ain't over for Steele till he enrolls either. Rumors about a potential flip back to USC are starting to heat up. So much drama coming Oregon's way and I got my popcorn ready. So glad UW doesn't recruit drama queens like that.
