Why Washington Husky LB Jacob Manu won’t play against No. 7 Oregon

Everybody is up in arms about Manu playing his fourth game against UCLA. Whatever. Judd said it was a promise he made to Manu when they were recruiting him from the portal. He really wanted to play in the Rose Bowl in front of his family. Okay, sounds reasonable. UW was going to redshirt him from the beginning. Buddah getting hurt rearranged when they needed to play him. ZRS wasn’t ready to play when the injury happened. Got it. A true freshman coming off an ACL not quite ready to go 100%, that checks out. If Al-Uquda is healthy, Manu plays the last four games of the season and the bowl game. That’s not how it worked out for UW. There’s got to be a reason kids like Fish and like they his program. He seems like a guy who has their back. This is another example of that. ZRS is playing great, Bryant has been solid all year and Alexander has been really good the last month, they’re all quite good enough to compete with Oregon. Unless Manu calls offensive plays then promises made, promises kept. Good for Judd on this one.
So don't play him in literally any other game than Oregon? It's not hard, unless you're Judd.
yep, if they knew he wanted to play against ucla then you don’t let him play in one of the other games so he plays whoregon.

Not hard.
ZRS wasn’t ready from his knee injury to play when Buddha went down. They would have played a few games with just Bryant and Alexander at LB. They needed him to play before they wanted to use him. Injuries suck and make it so you do things that weren’t in the original plans. Judd isn’t my favorite character but ragging on him for this is kinda stupid.
oh, this provides a little more context. Makes sense BUT if we’re bashing raging on fisher for no good reason than I’m out of here.

I understand it.
I also understand a UW coach telling him to take his jersey off and get the fuck out of here, why is he even here if he'd rather play UCLA in an empty stadium than a fully lubricated Husky Stadium against Oregon. Sounds like a fucking Arizona player that should fuck off

Some version of this. Fly his family up for the Oregon game then. This story has bothered me all year. He’s a good player, but the position he plays is easily replaceable in the portal.

Feel like a lot of "player's coaches" would still unload on that kind of shit.
How do his teammates feel about that? Christ.

The schools protecting anyone’s redshirt these days is kind of stupid.
yep. use 'em while you got 'em. freshman aren't really freshman anymore anyway. fucking kids show up ready to play these days. gone are the day of the senior laden that scares everyone because experience. fucking teams that are loaded these days are starting freshman. if they're good they're good so play 'em because you're not getting four years anymore.

ZRS and Alexander are both local. I’d say They’re stoked Manu is out so they have more opportunities to crack Oregon skulls.

I wouldn't overlook the effect on the rest of the team
And on the game
Maybe a Nick Saban tuff guy isn't the answer these days but soft player's coaches rarely are either

Freshman play, but there is no program killing it and starting a bunch of freshman. Go look at Ohio State’s defense and you will see most of them played a little bit as a freshman, were rotating in as sophomores, and start their junior year. They have other guys that have been rotation guys and are finally getting a lot of playing time their senior year.

College football isn’t much different that it has always been. Guys that are 3-4 years older that have experience are typically better than 18 year old freshmen.

I wish Manu was playing against Oregon. That said, he was hurt to start the year. If he didn’t get a waiver the plan all season has been to play four games and come back next year so he can get NIL money and improve his draft stock.

All the games matter, but we have already lost three. He was promised the UCLA game so Fisch kept his word. Anything other than slight disappoint he is not playing against Oregon is kind of ridiculous.

It’s not the end of the world, but I’m sure he made some decent money up here. We probably paid Jonah and Davis $1m each or something. Would have easily rather had another good lineman or two or an edge than those three. We cry poor and then waste money on luxury items. Some of the pickups have been good and probably cheap, but there’s lots to question. Will need to spend money on a left tackle, corner, a big bodied fast wide receiver, tight end, definitely an edge and probably a DT this offseason. This was the year to make a move.

Literally everything the defense has done has been damn near perfect.
No team scoring more than 24 is a hell of a stat, especially when the offense has put them out to dry over and over and over again in half the fucking games.
Take all this jilted teen girl shit about Manu out on the playcalling and the offense.
This is a non issue, having him all of next season will be a huge deal.

The more I think about this, the more it pisses me off. Like what in the utter fuck. How could Fish not have been out in front of this and had a better plan to utilize him this year, and what a fucking pussy for wanting to play against the powder blue instead of nothing else matters.

Davis is really good when he plays. I agree that Coleman‘s money would have been better spent elsewhere, but it’s not the end of the world.

Not a bunch but there are 10-win teams that have freshman playing full-time starting roles. They're everywhere and too numerous to cite and that has been the trend for a few years now. It used to be a big deal when a true freshman started and starred. It's not really a big deal now.
I'm not saying 8 of 11 on a starting side are freshman. But it's not that uncommon for a freshman to be the best option at a given position and coaches are playing them now and not saving them for some future effort. And if they're good you're not going to get 4 years of them anymore. In that respect and others, I disagree with your comment that cfb isn't much different than it's always been. I think it's changed quite dramatically.

Washington has a much harder time beating UCLA in the Rose Bowl than they do beating Oregon.
UCLA is broken beyond repair. That was as incompetent an effort by a major D1 name program I've seen in quite some time, and that's saying a lot.
Probably time to put away the "UW can't beat UCLA" routine. That was not a hard game at all.
