Who will the starting RB be?

This position is pretty wide open imo. I am not as high on Washington as most. I want to think Callier will get the job on his 9th year of eligibility. He has shown in the past to be a guy who can probably reliably touch the ball 20 times a game.

One thing is for sure, we won't have another Polk/Sankey. Damn was UW spoiled in that position the past 6 years or so. Thanks for bringing home something worthy with those monsters you had Sark you lazy fatass.
 
I think it will be Washington and I think he will be really good. He's the next NFL running back.

Caller, Cooper, and Coleman should be good back ups. I think we use more of a committee than we did under Sark. We will be good at running the ball. It's not a huge concern of mine.

He's the only back we have with the experience and body type to carry the ball 25 times a game. D.Wash has the body but when you watch him you can see he is still green where it comes to the RB position. Callier is going to get many carries but his size cannot match Coleman. Cooper will need to have his knees protected.

Coleman is the best Lompoc running back since Nip.

Coleman hasn't even had one college carry, so other than his size, I don't know how you can say he can carry it 25 times a game? Does he fumble? Can he pass protect? Does he hit the right hole? Is he patient and lets the blocks set up?

There is a lot more to playing RB than size and speed, and I doubt Coleman can match Washington in those areas. Washington may be raw, but he is 220 and is fast. Coleman could end up the better back, but I will believe it when I see it. At least we have seen The other guys flash some ability at the college level.

Size is often overrated. Sankey is only 5'10" 200 and he was a workhorse. Same with James and Barner at Oregon. Coleman might be very good, but he didn't dominate in high school and he wasn't a can't miss recruit. He had some shitty games his senior year. Too many times we have redshirt freshmen touted as the next great player, and very few of them meet the expectations.

Just curious why you're not high on D. Washington? The (alleged) fumbling issue? Anything else?

A fumbling issue can be corrected. I think DW (I like to call him that) could be very good.

I don't have any YAC stats, but it seems like Callier will go down if he runs into a strong breeze.

I just don't really remember being overly impressed to the point where I knew he would be the next starter. Sure he went off during the Oregon State game but so did a guy who doesn't have knees.
 
My guess is we see a pretty balanced carry load from Wash, Coleman, Callier and Coop until we get through the cupcake portion of our schedule. Once Pac-12 play starts, one of the four will have emerged as the "guy" and he'll get 75% of the workload from there (Washington is my guess).
 
You can't expect any of these backs to perform like Polk and Sankey when a bunch of twisters ran the running game coordinator who made them so successful out of town. I miss you Coz!

That's the knock on Callier. He is not going to get YAC. D.Wash has size but just needs more reps. If Coleman is a good YAC back he could grab the Lion's share of carries.

I agree that I haven't been overly impressed by DW, but I also haven't been disappointed yet. I'm willing to look past the fumbling thing (Sankey's fumbled KR at Nebraska was frustrating, but he overcame it). I'm willing to LIPO on Washington.

Not to be a dick but has Callier ever even touched the ball 15 times in a game let alone 20? I think Callier has no upside, he is what he is. He's a nice change of pace back who is good in the passing game.

I like the idea of Washington being the starter, with Coleman being the short yardage specialist. Then Callier being the third down back. Cooper is the big unknown given how much he's recovered from another year away from his injury.

I'm nervous, excited, and anxious to see our running game as there is potential but I don't know what our running game will be like.

While QB with Petersen's coaching and three highly rated recruits at QB I'm certain one will emerge as a good starting QB.
 
Washington's fumbles against Illinois came at the last instant before he hit the ground. Ball security wasn't an issue while he was running. I think this is an issue that can be "cleaned up." Washington has size, speed and power. He should get better and better. I think him and Coleman will be a good 1-2 punch. Not sure who is the 1 and 2.
 
I speculate that Washington could be the closest thing we've had to Dillon if coach Pete's staff can teach him to hang on to the ball.
 
I'm unwilling to make a prediction. They're all unknowns other than Callier and him getting 20 or more carries would be a bad sign. He's just not anything special. I once predicted great things for him but his knee and lack of improvement before the knee changed my mind. He falls down for no real reason and can't create anything on his own. He's also several steps slower than he was as a freshman or sophomore.

I like Washington but haven't seen anything from him to convince me he's more than a battering ram with speed. I'm not saying he can't do more, but I haven't seen it yet. He's definitely the odds on favorite and the whole fumbling thing has been overblown.

Cooper, if his knees really are back, is the best package of experience, lateral quickness and elusiveness, size and speed. What if his knees really are 100%? I'd expect him to become the #1. I understand why people are skeptical on him though...it would be stupid not to be.

Coleman...don't know. He looked good in high school.

McDaniel is the forgotten guy. He was a sick running back in high school and played it at 220+. He's lighter and quicker now but still has solid size. Don't rule him out.
 
If Callier starts we are done. Write that down and put it in your wallet. Cooper has the only burst on the team (laterally can he get loose? That's the question) Lavon Coletrain is the Jay Ajayi on this team though. The between the tackles guy.

Petersen and his ability to field nfl quality tailbacks is noticable. Ajayi (who NOBODY recruited, much like doug martin) never got dumped behind the LOS. We had problems stopping him. Coleman, from what I've heard (from people who actually pay attention at practice) say he's pretty good. (The guys from dawgman, especially kim, pay zero attention to what is happening on the field. It's a joke, then they pretend to know who is good or not).

I've seen it first hand as I've attended many a practice and scrimmage over the last 3 decades, much longer than those fluters. Condotta was ALWAYS paying close attention, taking notes, talking into a recorder. (We're gonna miss him as he was dialed in a.nd worked hard.) The dawgman guys/girls spent most of every practice/scrimmage bullshitting with fans, paying zero attention, then passing off practice reports. That place is a fraud of a website
 
Callier should play because he is good catching out of the backfield, blocking and he is sneaky out of the backfield running the ball (he just has zero explosion, at least didnt after his surgery, and he hossed up while not playing for a year) just don't think he should start.

Cooper stayed in d-1 shape while off for 3 fucking years. I see a rare dedication in that kid. Washington will play of course, but the only burner we have at tailback Is a kid with 3 ACL surguries.

Again thank you Sark for neglecting another important position group. In 4.5 recruiting classes, Sark recruited 4 tailbacks on paper. That is a disgrace
