My memory of games in the 80s are unclear, even though I used to attend the games as a student during those years.
But mainly I was so drunk during the games, I had to read the paper the next day to see what happened.
But anyway, didn't the 84 team's offense kick ass, go 11-1, and win an Orange bowl over Oklahoma? What changed from 84 to 85? We lose an awesome running back?
I don't think the 84 offense was great, it was the defense that carried that team.
The 84 team had the first great defense - the Purple Reign defense because Prince
They beat Oregon while managing one first down
Millen got benched before the only loss and came in to lead the win over Oklahoma so he wasn't horrible, he was just bad.
But the defense saved the day

That Orange Bowl remains the greatest road trip ever for me. My wife and I hadn't got married yet so she still put out

Indeed I expected that the D was rock solid, but from looking at the scores from the season, it also looks like our O could get down the field, at least against average teams:
"outscored its opponents by a combined total of 352 to 145"
