Who are the freshman surprises this season?

Petersen played 8 true freshman last year and said in a recent interview he's willing to play 8 more again this year.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Joyner play at CB and on special teams (especially KOR), Renfro, McClatcher, and Pounds at WR, and Gaskin at RB. Petersen isn't afraid to play freshman on the DL, so Potoae might factor in, and I expected 1-2 LB to play, especially if Bartlett and Beavers can make 2nd team LB.

I can see the surprise of this year being Bartlett since everyone raves about how cerebral he is and the fact that he was also a QB and state champ at wrestling. If not, Pounds might surprise at WR if we actually have a QB who can throw the ball.

That's not how I heard and/or read it. He said they played 8 true Frosh last year and that he doesn't anticipate playing that many this year:

"We played eight true freshmen last year, and I don't know if we'll play eight again, but I know we're going to play a handful of them."

Hopefully not too many play. I'm not sure why Dissly didn't redshirt. He obviously flashed ability, but he only played 6 games. I think he got hurt at some point, but he didn't need to play. Hopefully we don't waste Potoa'e or someone like that.

I could see McClatcher & Gaskin being a big contributor.

Looking at UWs roster: there's lots of bigger Y/TEs, questionable RBs, lots of quick scat/slot backs, maybe a True fresh QB, and an OL that's not average at best tight now.. To me that reads like lots of bubbles and screens behind the LOS. Takes advantage of the roster strength: lots of bigger Wrs/TEs blocking for several quick little playmakers. It also mitigates weakness of a young QB scanning/reading downfield, and a weak OL from pass pro on deep drops. Those plays are simple reads for a QB to make pre-snap.

McClatcher, Dotson and Mickens could make hay with those type of plays. McGrew eventually as well. I know you guys hate those plays, but that's just how I see your roster shaping up the next year or two.
