Usually it's just us getting our hearts ripped out of our chests and then stomped on before dying of Race's AIDS.

IMO...

2014: "Holy crap we hired an elite coach!" Result: a most disappointing season, riddled with questionable coaching decisions and a breathtakingly incompetent offense. LET DOWN.
2013: "Wait until Sark gets his own guys in there." Or "2013 will be special." Result: more of the same Sark nonsense with blowouts, 3 game losing streaks, and everyone begging our administration to sack Sark. Praise fucking allah for Pat Haden, may we never forget. LET DOWN.
2012: "Supersick defensive coaching hires, year 4 is the year!" Result: offense regresses and some of the worst OL play in CFB history. LET DOWN
2011: "Year 3 baby, most coaches prove themselves by this point!" Result: blowouts to any team with a pulse and setting defensive NCAA records for ineptitude. LET DOWN
2010: "Jake for Heisman! #hope". Result: lol. LET DOWN
2009: "Sizzle, free pub, and no HWSNBN!" Result: near upset of LSU, shocking upset of Pete's #3 USC (not such a great victory in hindsight). Some bad losses but emerging players and some legitimately entertaining games after @Owen12. MILDLY PLEASANT SURPRISE WITH LETDOWN LITTERED THROUGHOUT.
2008: "Stick a fork in this fucking stupid program. NAACP and Emmert with the last laugh, villainous cretins that they are." Result: unparalleled failure for the once mighty and proud program. LET DOWN
2007: "It's year three and our ND-reject coach's sucktitude is well known, but maybe Jake and co. surprise." Result: Jake is absolutely and undeniably electrifying in this offense (before Sark neutered him), but the team and coach are absolutely terrible. LET DOWN.
2006: "Stanback FTW." Result: injuries, poor coaching, horrible losses, malaise is deep-seated in the program. LET DOWN.
2005: "LOL AIR FORCE." Result: politically-motivated hire's failure is immediately evident (boy we sure showed ND that they definitely shouldn't have fired him after year 3 by giving Ty a 4th year and going 0-12. Wait the media never brings this up?? #naacp #hypocrisy). LET DOWN
2004: "Gilby is retained, UW doesn't give a fuck about football #wewereafootballschool." Result: Worst season in history before @Owen12. LET DOWN.
2003: "Don James' dried blood was on the same administrative knife that stabbed Skippy." Result: replacing a coach at a power school the summer immediately before fall camp ends, predictably, in horrible fashion. But yeah, at least we beat a 10-win WSU team and BigBallaJ couldn't be happier and wants Gilby brought back. LET DOWN.
2002: "OK seriously why are we getting progressively worse..." Result: 4-5 start and then the quixotic 'Northwest Championship'. Puke. Shoutout to the WSU game which was admittedly awesome and Nate Rob was/is the fucking man. LET DOWN.
2001: "Let's ride that Rose Bowl momentum woo!" Result: the beginning of the end and a syphilitic bowl game that made me want to stab myself. LET DOWN.
2000: "Year 2 of this hotshot coach and a local QB that is full of talent but hasn't quite taken us to the next level." Result: Tui cements himself as a Husky legend and we win the motherfucking Rose Bowl in the last great season in FIFTEEN FUCKING YEARS. Result: PLEASANTLY SURPRISED.

I don't have the heart to do the 90s, outside of the first few years it would be mostly bad.

So I guess you can make an argument for 2009, but outside of that it's 2000? Jesus christ.

In conclusion: we are fucking due for a nice surprise season. I hope it's this year.

The Brock Huard teams preseason top 5 only to get their ass beat by Nebraska were painful years.

This year has high potential to surprise bc the masses are expecting so little with built in excuses already in place. I wouldn't consider the year a pleasant surprise by going to a shit tier bowl, that's what I expect.

Now if Pete has the team still in the race for the north in November, I'll be pleasantly surprised.
 
That is correct, the year 2000, although 2003 in hindsight due to the last Oregon victory. But it has been 20 years of "team is young" so what do you really expect? It started with Lambo using the "young team" excuse due to the sanctions. Then unless you stick with the same coach in perpetuity, there is the running problem of higher than normal turnover as players come and go more often. So, the "team is young" excuse just lives on forever. LIke my repeated posts.

After the 0-2 start, that season was a fun one, especially after the '98 dreckfest. That damn UCLA game though.

How damning that UCLA loss turned out to be. It got HWSNBN into the Rose Bowl with a decidedly mediocre team...which was the genesis for everything that went to hell ://///

That game was the mother of all ironies for the huskies:
-It was a Paus that did them in. Cory not Casey.
-It screwed UW out of a rosebowl
-AND as a result it got Ty into the rosebowl, which in my opinion really created the false narrative that he was good coach and got him the ND job and later UW.

If UW won that game, not only are they in the RB, they arguably never hire Ty. Butterfly effect.

I would give 1999 a slight edge over 1983. That year UCLA made the rosebowl at 6-4-1 and beat the shit out of Illinois. Like 45-6 or something. Rick Neuheisel was rosebowl MVP. They started the year 0-3-1 and made the rosebowl, cray. I still think 1999 was worse tho.

Im sure Race can remember something from pre-WWII. But my memory doesn't go much past 1983.

This is a good thread—let's not ruin it with Ty-blaming. Only fucking Doogs think Ty did anything to our program.

We were ONE AND TEN the year prior to Ty's hire. Ty sucked, but after 30 straight .500+ seasons we won ONE game in 2004.

Ty would've won more than one in '08 with Jack, too.

I hate Ty, but acting like his hire was some atrocity is stupid.

It was Gilby. Gilby is Fredo.

Also, '99 was the last pleasant surprise. We got fucked in the UCLA game by the refs.
