When did you get hooked on crootin’?

before internet recruiting sites, on Saturdays the question was who was going where on the Long Beach best in the west rankings ~ real catnip to read with avid interest back in the day.. that was the origins of recruiting buzz for me, then it was dos based recruiting chat rooms ~ let the hilarity ensue

Rick arrived with the internet recruiting sites. Our first great recruiter
Also our first he can only win with the previous guys recruits
Sark would win 7 games with his recruits
Dennis and company didn't like Petersen recruiting but Petersen could build a team before he burned out
Agree with most of what you say or write but why do you discount the argument that many of Rick’s Rose Bowl players were recruited and developed initially by the previous staff that played a significant role (foundation) in winning the conference and RB. Obviously Rick gets a ton of credit coaching the team and he was able to motivate his team. I wouldn’t call Rick a great recruiter although recruiting was exciting because he brought a lot of sizzle.
The program began to go downhill after the previous staff players cycled through and the team became soft. Obviously firing Rick was a bad move but I highly doubt he would have taken another team to a RB appearance. We wouldn’t have gone 1-10 or 0-12 either but most of us were not surprised how things went at UCLA. Even his success at Colorado was much of Barnett’s guys.

It’s a fact Boner was/is a great coach and he recruited his best player during his time here. Can you not admit that the Big Penix years had a great or significant contribution from Petersen’s recruiting and evaluation including Lake where Coach Pete ran the program although burnt out. Not taking away from DeBoer’s coaching but he benefited greatly having a solid foundation. Our former center and the wr he took to Bama originally were recruited by Lake although I imagine Pete had them on his board early on. The only player Boner recruited to Alabama and UW was their TE Josh C.
The fact is DeBoer hasn’t built a D-1 program from the foundation and he has definitely underperformed at Alabama with team full of high blue chip players. Alabama fans are nuts if they want him gone and if he does move on to Penn State bama will sink to pre Saban years.
Not trying to be argumentative, I give Petersen a nice tip of the cap to Boners great 2 years at UW and he gets most all of the credit. I’d give Pete 15-20% credit for Kalen’s success and I would bet he would acknowledge Petersen’s foundation as significant. Starting to ramble 🤦‍♂️

About a year before Reggie Williams and ET committed. Also the local OL 5 star who retired early from a bad back. Also Rick's 7 WRs.

FWIW tho, this is the first year I've really not followed at all. Probably in part because I don't enjoy going on DM ever since Kim and Chris' latest divisive intolerance pogrom brought out all the suckups and flag wavers. It's all just too embarassing.
If anyone here knew anything I still probably wouldn't care anymore… realizing there aren't that many fall weekends left before I'm dead and I do love autumn. But I do still find myself watching the games if they're on later at night.

I think once the stupid Hayes Fawcett "edits" started was a good time to get out. I also don't understand why they started the Crystal Ball thing. It was more interesting to follow when you didn't know where the players were going to choose.

Crystal Dongs > > > Crystal Balls

I used to get on dial up scrounging the internet for recruiting info. I think it was the class where we lost victor rogers to Colorado and I remember a class with a guy that was supposed to be great named Antonio cooks but I think he went to jail.

Prior to that I only had access to athlons preseason preview and review of each class. Or the newspaper list of recruits. My scientific method of determining how good someone could be by what their name sounded like brings back fond memories. I was convinced Lester towns would be great with no real info as a young doog.

I remember going over to my neighbors who had FoxSportsNW to watch Reggie hat fake UCLA then put on UW hat.
Lurked the free boards, never gave a dime to dawgman

Probably 2001 to 2003. I feel like I stumbled on an article about a big time line recruit then I started searching the web and landed on 10.95 because that's where the info was. I think the early signing period has decreased intensity of it but also I think I still have PTSD from DeBoer leaving and the impact. Feels kinda futile at the moment. I also agree with Grandpa Race that it doesn't really matter unless the players produce. I appreciated Petersen recruiting because of that. Yeah he chased some stars but it was usually because Petersen is a great talent evaluator and prognosticator.

My guess is the first year that you (I) could watch the faxes roll in to the AD/Coach's office. The one day a year that I look forward to wasting an entire morning.

When I was a little guy I remember King 5 did a spot the signing of Napoleon and the highlights were insane. From that point I was hooked. My local 7/11 in Kirkland would have copies of Cal High Sports for some dumb reason and that shit was awesome. Of course that lead to finding Sports Washington and my teen boi obsession was complete.

I don’t give a shit anymore though.

with no avatar and a handle like that, it’s clear you’ve given up on more than teen boi stalking.

The name of that OL we're thinking of was Nathan Rhodes. Apparently he took a lot of recruiting hymens.
I've mentioned this before, but I actually raced with him at the track a few times in the couple years after he had to medically retire due to a bad back. Great guy back then.
