Where have I heard this before? Oh yah, it was comments about James Atoe: "The Huskies have shifted Ben Riva across the offensive line, moving the 6-foot-6, 306-pound junior from right to left tackle because, as Steve Sarkisian noted, Riva has shown the potential to be an “elite” left tackle with NFL upside."

What does "NFL upside" mean?

Truthfully, I am encouraged by Riva. I'm just sick of the hyperbole. When our head coach starts making these kinds of proclamations, he's like an excited puppy that just discovered his wiener.

There are ways to publicly compliment a player without making such silly statements. After a while, people don't take you seriously. "Joe Schmoe is playing really well. He just needs to keep working hard and learning. If he does that, he can become as good as he wants." There, simple.

Wasn't it Ta'amu whom Sark said if he wasn't an NFL first rounder they would have done something wrong? Do I have that detail correct?

"NFL upside" in coach speak would I think be the first step toward developing NFL potential. Does Riva as a RS junior entering his fourth season in Sark's program have enough eligibility remaining to graduate as NFL ready? Some OL kids are NFL ready by the end of their second or third year of college football. Alas, we haven't seen any of those alpha OLs since Neuheisel fucked up Husky Football.
 
Upside = Not good enough for whatever is being describes. "Upside" is like a negative value on a number line.

Used in a sentence: "Stop worrying about Banner and Garnett. Nathan Dean has more upside than both of them combined," said Scott Eklund.
 
The hyperbole by Sark is not good coaching. He did the same thing with Price last year. He called him a great QB throughout Spring and Fall Camp, and look what happened. You got to keep these guys hungry. Nothing should ever be good enough. That's what most elite coaches do. They are tough to please, so the players are always striving for perfection.
 
doesnt upside typically refer to remaining potential that hasn't yet been reached due to inadequate coaching or development?

Talking about upside in a redshirt junior doesnt seem like a great thing, It just tells me that he has had 4 years to help Riva reach his potential and still hasn't.

Fuck yeah, look at all these players who are playing below their capabilities! Great News NFL! UPSIDE! ...Sark logic...
