Actually, what is stupid is the criticism of explosiveness as a metric. If you are analyzing per play or per drive results, you can look at overall efficiency, or you can break it down further into components like "success rate" (how often are plays or drives "good") and a measure of how good the good plays are. Which is where explosiveness comes in.
