UW Couch Sales & Purchases (Portal Tracker)

Considering our poorness, the strategy really should be get ten legit high schoolers every year that make some money and are projected to play year one and 10 “diamonds in the rough” that cost nothing. Then 5+ legit starters in the portal every year, 10-15 filler guys to offset the middle of the road attrition.

Considering the opportunity cost, it’s kind of pointless to spend the money to have a very deep 20-25 person recruiting class.

I was actually on the side of building mostly through HS recruiting but I see now that isn't going to work at UW. The young guys don't stick around to be old guys, and old guys are the ones who win, so you have to focus more resources on portal players. I don't like it but acceptance is setting in.

It feels like Fisch sold out in the name of signing that "best class ever" at UW and lacks the purchasing power to go big in the portal.

This smells right.

I’ve been questioning use of resources for about a year now. We spent $2m on a RB that wasn’t that good, and a corner that barely played in a conference where no one can throw. Those were put you over the top moves when you had a good DL and OL. And this year we had millions fall off the books from seniors and that got spent back on a recruiting class and Demond. And we spent $250k on Manu last year for four games and probably $500k this year at a position that we have a shit ton of depth at.

When you are poor like UW you must get your money on the field and at actual key positions.

Agreed with everything. If we had an actual qb that could see I’d be more willing to take a shot at that position.

The WR core is gonna be a problem next year. Other than OL, I’d say the offense is worse across the board as of today.

If UW can't even get a one of the good enough / experienced remaining portal WRs like Kyle Parker of LSU (originally from Texas), then I would have to blame Pat Chun for not raising more money for NIL and keeping NIL in-house rather than letting a 3rd party handle it.

The problem with the WR corp as it stands now is definitely not talent but it is experience. Rashid Williams will be a RS-JR next year but missed nearly all of 2025 and only has 18 catches to his name. Roebuck gained a lot of great experience last year thankfully and will only be a true soph after 42 catches. Chris Lawson only caught 10 balls and will be a true soph next year. Without an experienced transfer, that isn't a veteran WR room and the 4th WR will be either Justice Williams (RS-Soph with 2 career catches), RS-Frosh Azose with no catches, or a true frosh.

But one has to think TE will be an improvement because DeGraaf will be going into his 3rd year (true JR) and he has 47 career catches and Kade Eldridge will be back healthy while Naone takes off his redshirt and will battle with two other guys along with Rhino for #3 TE.

I do think the OL will be better, not by a massive amount but it does return 4 of 5 starters. There may be some growing pains at LT with Greene / Kolt Deidrich but Mills is a beast, Hatchett will be healthy again, Champ T. should take over for G. Hatchett at RG and has a much higher ceiling, and Azzopardi is a RS-SR who showed good improvement between his RS-Soph and RS-JR year.

RB is worse heading into the season but it's worth noting that Jonah Coleman had a career worst YPC (4.9) and had his lowest yardage total since he was a true frosh. Mohammed also averaged 4.9 ypc while interestingly enough, Jordan Washington averaged 8.6 yards per carry on a small sample size (27 carries) while Jayden Limar averaged 5.7 yards per carry toting the ball 46 times. While there is no way JW's ypc will stay that elevated if he has 100 carries and same for Limar if he has 125, it wouldn't surprise me if they collectively averaged over 4.9 ypc. Would that be that much worse? Bonner is the wildcard since we don't know if he'll be able to embarrass defenses as a frosh but he is supremely talented.

Lastly, we have QB. A returning starter with a full season's of starts under his belt usually progresses rather than regresses, right? And I'd argue that I'd rather have more talented RS-Frosh like McMillan and Brierly as back-ups than a RS-SR who had been pushed out at Tulane.

Not all QB’s progress. Has Demond progressed since the Tony the Tiger bowl?

The QB is being forced to play here. I’ll be shocked if he plays better this coming year. I’ve been wrong more than I’ve been right but I really don’t see it.

That's totally fair. I guess what I'm trying to say is that usually QBs are better in their second year of starting than their first. Of course it's not guaranteed since DW could get dinged, players around him could get dinged, and / or he decides to play video games all of the time instead of watching film.
