Perhaps the cat was out of the bag too soon, but news that a wealthy booster wants to build a football stadium for the University of Miami in Coral Gables was met with a resounding “Hell no!” from local officials caught off guard.
Proponents are now trying to clear the record after the Herald reported that Coral Gables High School, which has just undergone a $47 million renovation, is a potential site. Panicking parents contacted the school district, prompting Superintendent Alberto Carvalho to draw a strong rebuke and clarify he had not been approached about it. The city of Coral Gables said it is “NOT in favor of a stadium project” and that the “speculative” proposal would not be compatible with surrounding neighborhoods, a spokesman told the Herald.
It’s not shocking that a community in a county burned by empty promises and the Marlins ballpark taxpayer-funded boondoggle would not not jump on the bandwagon immediately after the proposal’s haphazard announcement Sunday night. A tweet by John H. Ruiz, founder of Medicare litigation firm MSP Recovery, officially broke the news after rumors started swirling on college sport blogs.

Here's my take. One of the things I always liked about Miami was that they were somewhat unique. Without trying to, and ironically somewhat quietly, they were during their first run trend setters. Not just on the field, but in other ways. Prominent alumni on the sidelines as a thing, coming back and working out together at the U's crappy facilities, some people say holding up the 4 fingers for 4th quarter was them, talking shit like nobody before ever, playing hard and basically not giving a fuck about other schools' traditions and prestige ... and basically doing their own thing and telling you to fuck off before, during and after games.
I liked the Orange Bowl and so did everyone else who wasn't a dipshit. It was old, historic, rusty, not nice and in a gamey neighborhood. It scared people like Babs. I liked that shit. It wasn't a fucking country club. When I want that, I go to SGC, not a football game. I liked that they had no indoor facility and the weight room had no AC and that Texas' old JV women's softball facilities were nicer than Miami's and it didn't fucking matter. I liked that especially large state schools had way more shit and Miami bent them over anyway.
I wouldn't mind a stadium near campus. If they were smart, they would not try and make it a huge place because Gables will never support that. Make it a small footprint like Stanford's 50,000 capacity, which is just basically right there tucked on campus. It's plenty big enough but is otherwise inconspicuous. If you're kicking ass who fucking cares?
They're never letting them tear down Gables High School. They're right. A lot of Miami's old high schools represent historic architecture (see Miami High School, where Porky's was filmed). Gables High is, as I recall, a good example of Art Deco. They're not tearing it down so they need to move on from that. Pick another fucking spot.

Some very big names that would have been Canes in another life. Clemson has taken a lot as well. Mario can handle those guys. But Alabama and LSU have been a recruiting problem for the locals for two decades now. Can't keep 'em all but you gotta keep a critical mass and Miami in particular has not been doing that.
