So he just creeped on some random students, followed them or scouted their place, killed 4 and left the downstairs 2 alive. Then drives off in his car right next to the house thinking he got away with it? Still weird.
 
A day later he was back in his criminology classes, where a fellow student claimed that the killer was “more animated” than in earlier months. His most recent project revolved around contacting criminals to survey their thoughts and emotions while committing a crime.

The prevailing thought is that he was stalking one of the victims.

Only thing that makes sense is that the last two killed were the ones with "defensive wounds" and he got spooked that the remaining people might have woken up, when they had not.
 
So the killer was also tied to the murder scene by "geofencing" good enough for warrants and prosecution but not for ballot mules. It's dark magic is nonfunctional for ballot drops.
