I always thought it was a way for a publicly funded university to justify raises to their staff. Why they would do that at a private school is beyond me. Does anyone hiring a coach in the future give a shit if you were the Asst Head Coach vs the Associate Head Coach vs the Deputy Head Coach?

I think the bigger issue is that Petersen has a group of coaches that he's been with for years, and they are all comfortable with each other. They are "his guys." Similarly, Tui has a comfort level (sad as it may be) with sark and the other party boys at usc.

More than anything it is a way to pay someone more money, even private companies have to play that bullshit game.

To my understanding it also allows Tui to be more involved in the everyday functions of a head coach. Deeper into the game planning, prep, etc.

So in the case of Sark, it means driving him home after a heavy night of binge drinking, disposing of used condoms, and covering in the event Sark gets caught with his pants down.
