I don't know why anyone is surprised. The consumer has simply gotten in under the wire to make some major pre—tariff purchases and is otherwise spending less. Keep thinking positively, girls. It's possible the consumer spending slowdown will act as a modest check on prices.

No one actually gives a fuck about tariffs or inflation on cheap consumer products. There are a million substitutions and lots of competition there. Thus price will matter a lot to buying decisions which has been my whole argument that you now seem to agree with.

People give a shit about high inflation on food and fuel where there are a lack of tradeoffs.

The White House eased tariffs imposed on China after several staffers were forced to warn President Donald Trump that his penalties would cause his supporters - or “Trump’s people,” - to suffer economically, according to a report.
While Trump was reluctant to lower tariffs against Beijing too quickly, several White House staffers – including Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and other aides – warned him the penalties were placing his own supporters in danger, sources told the Washington Post.
