This season has some tinges of the David Lynch-style noir. In the hands of a more capable director and writer it could be a really good slow-burning piece. I think they really fucked the dog by abandoning the surreal elements from the first season. There is a common theme of the higher ups in society being into some really fucked up, evil shit that they keep secret.
Originally this season was going to carry over The Yellow King stuff and the symbols so that there was a tie to the first season. In a very George R R Martin moment, the writer said "that stuff was what really drew people in to the first season so I'm gonna throw it all out to be edgy".
