And folks…please keep in mind all these countries had a trade agreement with each other called the USMCA.
If Trump is po’d that the US is getting screwed from that agreement he should go yell at the person who signed it.

Bob you understand…if a Canadian good is selling lower than a corresponding American good and you place a tariff on it, then the Canadian good rises on par with the American good. The net result:
-Canadian company gets hurt as they will sell less
-American consumers get hurt as they will pay more
-American companies may or may not benefit as consumers will buy less of that good

People are already at the limit…if you wanna decimate the automobile industry, by all means implement your tariff and see if people will tolerate any kind of percentage increase in cars.

Trump wont do this….this is an empty threat to look tough on the world stage.

(But by all means put a tariff on Canadian lumber. I wanna see my homes’ market value fly through the roof)

like most issues, the outrage is just a blanket resistance against anything Trump does. there's no logic behind it
 
An overlooked aspect is on taxes. A Canadian or European company that has no US presence and just moves products to the US pays $0 to the IRS for its sales made into the US. And we let that happen. Try shipping something to Europe. You get VAT assessed ~20% with no clawback potential in addition to any tariffs. Your only option to be able to clawback the VAT is to setup a corp there and then pay local income taxes. Total imbalance. If you want to test in European markets, it basically makes no economic sense to start small and attempt to directly compete against them. Europe gets their tax money if you dare compete.

Would also add, good luck getting a bank account setup in the country that you setup your Corp.

Yep, countries remove or reduce Tarrifs against U.S and *Gasp* American companies increase market access.
 
Luckily for us Buck has vast international trade experience and can help fill in the gaps here.
 
So here's a bit of reality... BNSF just canceled all their engineer classes they were going to run this year... that was as a result of the tarrifs... they only do that if they are expecting an economic slowdown...

Tarrifs will definitely hurt the economy... Trump has even aluded to it a few times... hopefully it gets overwith within a year as if inflation is bad could go up 1 to 3 more % with these... the GOP will lose in 26 and probably 28..Trump is playing with fire.

Still playing with fire though if it causes too much inflation for 26 and 28... even if it is the right thing to do long term

Like i said long term it may be the right thing... but if inflation is 4 or 5% in November 26 or 28 the GOP will lose seats.
