J.D. Covington, Richland. Prior to coming to Richland, coached Husky Legend Junior Coffey at Dimmitt HS in Texas (the Southwest Conference did not integrate until 1967).

Dick Armstrong Snohomish
Jim Kaveney Arlington. Only really remembered in Arlington by older guys like me. Two state titles, a runner up and a third place finish in a four year run.

A former football teammate of mine Lance Hatch (he also had a twin who was also a teammate) his dad coached Juanita to back-to-back state titles in the 1980s.

I put Otton at number 1 mainly because during my junior year I had a free period as an office bitch. He called to talk to #myLancers head coach and I took the message from him.

I’m pretty much the reason Cade Otton went to UW and is in the pros.

The best coach in the state came over from Texas, already had at least a couple hundred wins on his resume, was a real weightlifting tough guy that would punch Whittingham out, took over the worst football high school at the time (set the record for most consecutive losses), made the playoffs every single year thereafter, and when he got too old made sure his successor was a guy that was capable of winning 2 State championships and lost a 3rd in such extreme fashion that his DC was celebrating with his wife thinking they had won before the collapse.

“I bet y’all a coonskin that Molly Putz could knock you into the nickel bleachers.” (Covington, JD)

Jack Swarthout Olympia
He was the coach of my freshman team. At 71 he challenged the team he could do more one armed pushups than anyone on the team could do two armed pushups. If anyone could beat him, there would be no post practice conditioning. If we lost, double post practice conditioning. Nobody ever challenged him.

I thought Ed Laulainen might get a mention. He had a state championship at Kelso in 83. Also coached baseball. He was still impressive when I was there. He sent David Richie and Ty Fotheringill up to UW in consecutive years. They named the stadium after him like ten years ago. Incredible coach.

This is Jack Swarthout. Coached freshman under Darrell Royal in 56 then followed to Texas
When he was at Olympia I was a kid and we'd watch practice at Stevens Field. Kids today have no idea how easy it is now
He had a hot daughter my age as well.
