Gotta respeck @pawz devotion to the things he loves.
Pearl Jam is a corporate band. When you find a singer from San Diego, they don’t compare to the real Grunge bands from Seattle.
Side note that has nothing to do with this thread… I respect Scott Weiland because unlike Cobain and Staley, he banged speedballs and always wanted to take the stage. He lived for being a star and wasn’t reluctant like Cobain and Staley. He was a real rocker. Not saying he’s better than Cobain or Staley because he’s not (stage wise he has a very good argument), but he was much more mentally tough than either.

That was a label thing and wanting to sell records because Pearl Jam was the hottest band in the world at the time.
The STP records after Core are nothing like Pearl Jam

At one point I would agree. Same with Staley. The drugs got to them. Kurt being anti charismatic was what made him charismatic and special. Weird time in the world. I don’t think there will ever be a superstar like him again.
Cobain and Staley basically had to be begged to take the stage. Weiland had tours cancelled, but it was because his bandmates and label were too concerned about him staying alive. He was still touring until death.
Yep, he was on his deathbed for years before he actually died.
You raise a good point. Staley never got in trouble with the law. Weiland did and had some forced periods of sobriety and others where he needed money so badly he had to somewhat toe the line and not be too out of control. He lived large and had a couple of ex wives and children. Along with that, he seemed to have a greater need to be a frontman and get the accolades and attention.
Layne had a continuous bout with addiction with no stoppages, or at least any that I have ever read about. He didn’t lead an extravagant lifestyle and his only real expense was affording his habit.

That's exactly my read. I didn't really follow either band while they were still active. I'm always years or decades behind. But you described what I've gathered about both of them.
I actually didn't care for STP but heard them on Stern a time or two and really liked Wyland. He seemed pretty solid and healthy and had a enjoyable frank manner of speaking about his bouts with heroin. I think his habit was more like that, more of a rollercoaster, while Staley just lived it for years and steadily deteriorated.
I remember seeing Alice in Chains at the Redmond VFW.
