Going back to 1960, every coach through 2000 fielded some bad ass teams that went toe to toe with the best in the country. Owens and James both won Conference and National Titles, Lambright pissed away a lot of talent, but still won some really big games (beat Ohio State and Miami in back to back games), and Rick beat a "generational" Miami along with winning a PAC Title and a Rose Bowl. We all know how far the program fell after that, to more than a decade of historic lows, but IMO, Peterman is close to restoring it. Competing against the best is in the program's DNA. It should be expected.

Historically for damn sure ND is probably #1. But it's been 30 years (!) since they won a title and you have to go back another 11 years to get them another one. Two championships in 41 years. The Rust Belt ain't what it used to be. Neither is ND.
