Pretty sure it's always worked that way if you weren't a top-2 seed.
The Hawks were a 7-9 division winner when Beastquake beat the Saints in the wild card
You guys are right, I guess I'm responding to the new format where the #1 seed is the only team that gets a BYE. All because they want to get more teams in the playoffs and make more money. I don't like it.

I don’t know what I dislike more, the 7 team playoff and everything that goes with it or the 17 game season and records that aren’t consistent with previous years.
4 teams should have stayed home

The Rams were the 4 seed, in the old format they would have played the 5 seed on wild card weekend. Which is exactly what happened this year.
The only difference for the Rams is that they played on Monday night in this format which has never happened before. But instead of playing the two seed coming off of a bye (since the 3 seed lost) they are now facing the 2 seed coming off a Sunday game. So the Rams have one less day's rest for round two than they would have previously but their opponent has 7 less days rest than they would have previously.
