The Offseason Natty Thread: Portals, Assistant Coaches, Leopard Jackets, etc.

Can Grubb recruit? I know he can run an offense and call plays.

Think he's not much of a recruiter but if the offensive staff we are rumored to be getting is here (Kenny Hill, Kirby Moore, Adams plus Donte in SoCal) he won't need to be.

We should know soon.

I'm relying on you to tell me how the staff is viewed generally once hired since I know fuckall except Donte is mega.

Hill feels like a good risk on an up and coming QB coach.
Adams not sure if he can coach but we know he can recruit and I expect the WRs will produce much better in this offense regardless.
Moore can coach and recruit and he's shifting to TE but should be around to help with WRs and eventually slide over if Adams proves to be a poor coach after all.
Grubb very good OL coach.

RB coach is the one question mark on the offensive side, best bet is the Fresno guy Lee Marks I think his name. He's meh but RB coach is the least important coach on the team.

Defensive side I'm now hearing Malloe may be returning which is good if he's DL bad if he's LB. I liked the DL we were supposed to be getting from Boise though, up and comer.
LB no idea if Inge isn't coming.
Donte at DB/co-DC who can recruit like hell and looks like Chuck Morell the Fresno guy as the other DB. Good mix of a recruiter and a coach.
Steinauer is a homerun DC if he's really the guy.

More question marks on the D side but I feel pretty good about the staff as a hole as long as we get Donte and the Michigan guy as RC.

Yeah outside of Donte Morgan is the only other guy I know of reputation and he is also mega. Those two would be huge. So Grubb is basically the OC title but really coaching lineman then?

You could probably count on one hand how many schools have an OC where all of his play calling is terrific. Offensive play calling is the easiest thing to nit pick on a couch.

What kind of couch?

It’s a safe hire, it won’t go down in flames like the Donovan hire that’s for sure.

If the play works it was a great call and vice versa

The exception is the random play generator that Donovon used That was bad play calling

I believe there was an FSU guy early on saying Grubb's playcalling had some weak spells over this past year and to be wary of that. IE might be better if DeBoer calls the plays.
Nah, pretty sure Grubb was playcaller in 2020 and 3-3 record led DeBoer to taking back the reigns this year.

Yeah this. So just be on lookout for who's calling the plays.

Both Hamden and Donovan were terrible and I don't think that is subjective. Smith on the other hand you would have thought was just as bad as Donovan/Hamden with how much we? hated him and those offenses were the best ones we have had in a long time, they looked like Oklahoma against MOST teams. Smith might not have been elite, but he wasn't that bad but we? Hated him just as much as the other guys.

I guess my point is if the fans of a team says the play calling is just "concerning" is a good sign compared to how much shit most OCs get.

I get it! You want her to sit on your face! It's like a sexual thing you were going for there! Nice!

Also I believe Grubb's a quality OL coach

Why do you believe this?

The games I saw the qb and wr’s were good. Their offensive line was hot garbage. Haener was covey’d more than a handful of times. Their line looked slow and underwhelming.

Especially if your RPG only has enough RAM for three plays and two of them are runs up the middle.

This guy gets it.

Well Grubb is the QB coach, that means no Hill and probably means Sapolu as OL Coach. Not great news but not awful as long as no other downgrades.

pretty meh for OC hire...

Just more Kohl's cash for me I guess...

Should make it easier for DeBoer to raid the minor league teams in the Big Sky and MWC during free agency I suppose...

Don't like it. Has he ever coached QBs before? Seems like a big step up. Objectively, I would think it would be hard for the Huards to trust him to develop Sam.

In addition to OC, he was the QB coach at Fresno, was he not?

You're correct. I was wrong on that. He moved to be the QB coach 2 years ago.
