Never really paid attention to the drums on that song but they're cool. Love the remix of that song in the Pac-12 Championship Game hype video. His daughter supposedly went to WSU while I was there and everyone tried to figure out who she was. Cool story, bro, I know.
The way he holds the stick in his left hand annoys me.
I always think more of the video when it comes to this song.
It's a banger, of course, albeit heavy on 80s arena rock shlock.
REI Speedwagon? Was Sally Jewell the lead singer?
I don't think I get the reference/connection. I was a sucker for early 80s rock ballads during the early 80s. I'm not proud.

tend to agree. All those bands seem like lightweights in retro-spec.
Doesn’t prevent me from having a guilty pleasure playlist with great representation of these bands … and others …

Separate Ways is a great example of that. I want to, but don't hate it. It has been in and out of my head since Derek made the OP. It's back now. Catchy, tough song to hate even though I want to.

He's obviously a great, technical drummer and I enjoyed the walkthrough. On the other hand, his style is so far away from my own that I was slightly annoyed at times. Those annoyances are as follows: 4 on the floor (works on that song, though), two bass drums, more than 3 toms, 2 snare drums, Sonor drum kit (they sound tinny to me), and the constant switching to match grip (mostly because I never learned to use it effectively - french timpani grip all day). It's a tasteful beat, though. Always loved using the bass drum in fills with the toms and doing weird syncopations like he did towards the end. The head bobbing also drove me nuts. Just keep time in your dong metronome like us normal people.
