If as an article of quasi religious belief you think tax increases can ever be justified or accomplish anything positive, then there is very little anyone can show you that will convince you otherwise.
The problem is that "regressive taxes" really don't mean anything. If everyone pays the same tax rate, it is hardly regressive unless you just redefine the term. If you pay zero federal income taxes and have a marginal rate of 0%, it's hard to say that someone paying $3 million in federal income taxes and has a marginal tax rate of 37% is benefiting from a regressive tax. If Joe Blow buys 20 gallons of gas he pays the same tax as Daddy Warbucks on his 20 gallon purchase.
