All trolling aside, I know that you guys don’t like ND, but I actually see a number of similarities between what you guys are going through now compared to what ND went through when Brian Kelly first arrived. A few things in particular that really stand out:
1. Petersen keeps repeating that there needs to be attention to detail. Brian Kelly took over for Charlie Weis, who ran the team like a resort, just like Sark. One of the first things that Kelly did was to preach an attention to detail, and it started with simply forcing the players to organize their lockers in a particular way instead of just throwing their shit everywhere. It then expanded into practice and on-field components.
2. The players resisted, and then outright revolted. I get the impression that some of what you’re seeing at UW right now is resistance to change from the upperclassmen who are Sark’s guys. They’ve had it easy and they’ll be damned if they’re going to change now. Kelly even had to put down an outright revolt from these guys, which culminated in year two with a loss to USC where our Cyler Miles (Dayne Crist) may or may not have intentionally blown the USC game by letting a goal line snap go through his legs, resulting in a TD for USC. I don’t know if you guys are going to get an outright revolt in the locker room like ND did, but you’re probably not going to completely turn the corner until the bad eggs move on through graduation/attrition.
3. Kelly brought in “his” guys. He actually calls them “RKGs” (Right Kind of Guys) instead of “OKGs” like Petersen does. Either way, Petersen needs to recruit his ass off and purge the garbage from the roster, and I think that he will.
I’m not saying that ND is the elite of college football right now or anything like that, but ND is a possible glimpse of Washington’s future because our paths are strikingly similar. We had our Lambo/Gilby (Bob Davie), replaced them with Willingham, and then hired a fat guy who was an OC that had never been a head coach (Sark/Weis) that turned out to be a bust before hiring an actual good coach in Kelly/Petersen.
You guys know that I don’t like UW, but Petersen is going to bring you guys back.
