Reddit superiority guy here, this came from the subteddit group r/dataisbeautiful in which most of the data came from reddit users being polled.

Someone said some of the states like Montana and Alaska only got one response. Staff? True??

Pretty much because it was just a small group of Python programmers practicing how to present data on maps. Kind of like how the electoral maps are generated and such.
