STP and Scott Weiland

A week or two ago I saw the video of Scott Weiland singing horribly at a shitty gig that was probably at a bowling alley. It compelled me to give STP a listen. I knew a couple of their radio hits, but was not entirely familiar with their work. These guys were fucking great though, especially the first two albums. Their live show's from the 90's, early 2000's look incredible as well.

How do you compare STP to the other big 90's bands (AIC, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, etc.)?

They're always considered a step below all of those bands because they were basically a Seattle copycat act, but their stuff holds up really well. My one hesitancy to rank STP that highly as a great band is Weiland was a totally different vocalist for Velvet Revolver than he was for STP, which lends credence to the idea that STP was just mimicking the Seattle grunge sound. Still, I enjoy their stuff.

Here's how often I listen to those bands these days:

Alice
Nirvana
STP
Soundgarden

PJ

And here we fucking go again with someone putting a mediocre band above Soundgarden. I'd expect that from an actual duck, but from you @dncfredo?

Poont of clarification, I don't think STP was a better band that Soundgarden, I just find their stuff more listenable 20+ years later. Soundgarden was definitely more innovative/important/talented.

I didn't dislike STP growing up, but I found many of the other bands a far better listen then as well as now.

For whatever reason, I've always liked this song from that era:

And I get that Clone Temple Pirates (loloolalaaollozzzz) sound better now farther detached from what they were parroting.

Am I the only one that heard "STP" always in Richard Petty's voice?

Jesus fuckall. 90's rock shit.

Soundgarden
Tool
Alice
Nirvana

PJ

STP

Don't forget Korn. And AIC is 1, tool is 2. Soundgarden/STP/PJ are about equal, all had one good album.

Korn had some really good heavy stuff and I prefer them to Grunge fags. I just can't listen to some of it that much. Dark shit man (I don't even know if I want to continue posting here). I'm already negative enough as is.

Re: STP

Core (first mainstream album IIRC) definitely does have more than a tinge of Pearl Jam ripoff to it, but if you include their entire body of work, people make too big of a deal about it.

They're a really good band.

I thought RATM was also a kickass 90s band. They definitely had their own unique alternametalrapfunk sound, and it was angry. Their politics are a little out there at times, though nobody can argue they were right about a few people amassing a ton of wealth (and power).

Soundgarden and STP are equal?

Fuck off.

Soundgarden is on the top of the Seattle heap, and STP is well below the whole crowd. I'd put Soundgarden and Tool on about equal terms, but never saw Tool live so I can't say for sure they deserve that ranking.

If you don't kick ass live, you don't kick ass.

You know who really kicks ass live? Motorhead. Plus Lemmy will punch in your face if you look at him wrong.

What the fuck happened to Sweet Water? They should have been huge, but kinda petered out. Head Down was a great song.

Of course, none of them compares to AC/DC- the greatest rock band to ever rock. I put Highway to Hell up against all other albums and no other album ever wins. Of course, I'm the judge every time, so fuck off if you don't like the results.

I've seen tool live twice, and Soundgarden never. So fuck off.

Tool is good musically live but Maynard is a fuck stick.

You were 4 when Soundgarden was in their prime, so fuck off, junior. What the fuck do you know about the 90's - that your mom had to drive you to the shows?
