Darron Thomas wasn't a great QB, but he performed on the big stage and would take the big hits if it meant completing a pass. He was tougher than Mariota in that regard. It's amazing that Chip was able mold a team led by a future CFL QB with problems off the field, and lead them to the championship game. James was great, but underperformed when he was needed most. It helped to have a great supporting cast, like Jeff Maehl, Casey Mathews, etc.

I'm no football coach in a football state, but it seemed they weren't able to throw down field because the offensive line couldn't block Joey Bosa.

You have four guys who went on to be NFL Pro Bowlers (Stewart, Unger, Byrd, Ward) plus a couple more who hung around the NFL as starters to some extent for awhile (Chung, Schwartz, Dickson). What that says, I'm not really sure. But I've heard having NFL talent matters. As an added bonus, they punched Leavitt in the mouth in their bowl game.

Tebow dominated for 3 years straight. Cardale Jones had a couple good games, but couldn’t even keep the starting job.

Oregon lost because Ohio State dominated them on both sides of the ball.
