Someone please convince me that our OC and our offense isn't a complete dumpster fire.

Washington threw the ball 400 times last year ... ran it 607 times. Surely some of those runs were designed passes that either turned into sacks or QB keepers. Probably the difference between the 57% you are talking about and the 60% I'm citing.

But given the makeup of the UW offense and its relative strengths, that type of balance is probably what you should be expecting again in 2015.
 
@Dennis_DeYoung, if you want to talk the previous year, that offense sucked too. It was actually worse statistically than the one that scored 6 in Husky Stadium. Petersen's offensive issues didn't begin last year. They have been there since Kellen Moore graduated.

Their offense wasn't good. If it was, I'm sure Prince would be the OC. Unfortunately, Petersen hired Babushka instead of a real, experienced one.

The offensive scheme is nothing like it was for Petersen with Kellen Moore. Since he left, Petersen went to no huddle like the rest of college football, some pistol, some of his old shit. It's a jumbled mess. Go back and watch the 2013 Boise game and you will see that. Dink and dunk passing, no huddle, pistol formation bullshit. If I had the bowl game from 2012, I would watch that, but I also remember Boise playing BYU in one of the worst offensive football games I have ever watched. They laid some clunkers that season.

Some of you think that with the right QB, everything will be fine. I don't think it's that simple, but whatever. Everyone knows we need a better QB, but the scheme fucking sucks and is a mess.
 
And anyone saying Boise played well in the 38-6 loss deserve to DIAFF. They lost 38-6. That Boise team had some NFL players. No question that UW was more talented, but Boise had some talent and got plungered.

Roadie raises some viable concerns. I'll cut them some slack because it was a messy transition and the offense was replacing two all-americans, Kevin Smith, a QB and effectively Ben Riva. Loss of talent and messy transition. Abundance.

The biggest issue was probably QB as Cyler was 11th in the conference in QBR. The offense has to be better this year. With material improvement in QB play, I think it can be.

One thing about the play calling is there were plenty of times there was a call that players completely fucked up. Like Cyler fumbling for no reason. Dwayne Washington looking awful on wheel routes.
 
The biggest thing I remember about that home opener was that pre-injury Kasen was a beast.

The only way anyone can cut Babushka slack is to believe that last year was the beginning of a 'my way or the highway' process not designed so much to win games, but to show our lazy slacker fucks what is expected.

If that's not what was going on (and from a certain perspective, that's what looked like was going on), we are F U C K E D.
 
The saving grace for Smith is that at no point was it evident that Cyler was even running the plays he called correctly. 1.3 seconds after snap, Cyler would either run, dump off to WR, or throw a wobbly pass downfield that looked like he was playing 500.

The playcalling definitely wasn't inventive but there were plenty of cases last year where, after a play, I was left thinking to myself "if he would have thrown it at the right time, that would have actually worked pretty well" or "if Washington would have cut to the hole instead of to the lineman's butt, he would be gone" or "Cyler had a guy wide open but he freaked out and scrambled instead of opening his eyes and stepping up in the pocket"

I'm not saying Smith is good. We definitely haven't seen that yet, and he may turn out to be absolute shit, but I'd say that it is possible, despite what some on this board would say, that an OC can have improved results after a year of having guys in his system. It is possible.

Smith also gets shit on a lot by people saying he's unqualified (which is ironic because many of those same people wanted Tui as OC). The fucker's been coaching college football for 14 goddamn years, and his coaching career has had upward mobility (GA to lower-tier school QB coach to lower-tier school OC to upper-tier school QB coach to upper-tier school OC).

edit: lol @ calling boiseCC an upper tier school. Going from QB coach there to P12 OC was a huge stretch and well deserving of the criticism it has received.

I didn't like the Smith hire. (Agree with you @bananasnblondes on other points though). Not enough experience or track record. But I will cut him some slack and give him a chance.

That being said, if the offense is not materially better and by that I mean better to the point where we will look ahead and think it will be good in 2016, then Smith has to go. This school made the hires that ultimately saved Sark's job in 2012. It shouldn't be hesitant to give Petersen a blank check to go find a hot young coordinator.

I've never read one post here wanting Tui as the OC. It's okay to think critically sometimes and not just eat everything up with Petersen Banana boat. I get that you love him. Everyone here loved the hire, but fuck man, he hasn't proven anything yet.
