I thought his philosophy was to retain minimal knowledge or ability to analyze or discuss anything and just talk really loudly so his ignorance seems valid because no one can get a word in.

He doesn't need a Jedi geek, but Pete is smart/humble enough to know when he needs help. In addition to the team meeting, bringing in Bill Russell to address the team was supposabely on of the catalysts of the season getting back on track.
