I always found the interdimensional angle interesting, plausible, and full of explanatory possibilities.

People are going to be disappointed when it turns out whatever shows up is just some advanced AI thingy that programs our brains from afar to do their bidding and not the disgusting looking alien life form that was in all the movies. It won't be sexy.

More likely still is that they never show up because whatever mineral they are after is easily accessible through meteors or comets that are way closer to them and more cost effective for them to harvest.
