The "its not most the most optimal" is the hard part. America wasn't fat in the 50s and what's for dinner was definitely meat. If you cut out meat with its complete protein, you need to really work hard to get all your necessary amino acids. America is fat because of little exercise and carbohydrates. Especially flour and sugar, both plant based foods.
 
Science has been shitting on plant based diets for a long time. People just love the new big diet trend. So that way they can eat plant based for 1 day then donuts, pizza, cookies, and tacos the rest and try to take the healthy habit high ground in their size 42 jeans and un flattering shirt hugging their muffin top.

I use almond creamer in my coffee because the older you get the less you can handle lactose

I still enjoy rib of cow though

I like a mix of grains and greens and meat

I eat more chicken than any man ever seen
