Thank you. The only way to break out of this cycle of perpetual reliance on "so fucking young" true frosh is to retain the players you have and develop them into contributing upperclassmen.

Stevenson played a ton as a true frosh, got banged up for a while, and basically never saw the field again. How can anyone know whether he was "any good," @RoadDawg55‌?

Any warm body could have played safety in 2010. Justin Glenn and Sean Parker were hurt. Nate Williams and Fellner were the only other two guys we had at safety. It doesn't mean he was any good. There was literally no one else to play safety. My only memory of Stevenson is giving up a TD in the Holiday Bowl against Nebraska. Cooper Pelluer and Sione Potoa'e played as true freshman as well.

It's hard to keep track of when Stevenson was injured, but he never sniffed the field on anything but special teams after 2010. In 2012 he played in all 12 games. I don't remember him playing any at safety.

Peterman brought back Hudson and Campbell. If he really wanted Stevenson, he would be back. I would have no issues with him being on the team, but it really doesn't matter either way. So he starts for a 1-11 Hawaii team now, big fucking deal. I'm sure we will really miss him this year.

It's not a popular view on this site with all the dooging it up lately, but I expect baker and some of the other safeties to get injured this year and have a revolving door. They are too small. King should have been lifting weights all year last year but he had to play and messed up his shoulder. Because of it he is still like 180lbs.

It's a definite concern. Who knows though? Are smaller players actually more prone to injuries? We have three safeties the coaches seem to feel comfortable with. Then Walker, who got nothing but bad reviews from practice attendees, some freshman, and Brian Clay.
 
With so few veteran DBs returning this year, why the fuck did he run off Taz Stevenson? The kid was talented enough to play in all 13 games as a true frosh in 2010, had a fifth year of eligibility remaining, and instead will be lineup against UW on Saturday. Whatever health problems Stevenson had appear to be a thing of the past.

Stevenson mainly played on special teams in 2010. Parker and Nate Fellner started as our safeties back in 2010.

Stevenson then battled injuries and Glenn proved to be a better safety. With Parker and Glenn as our primary safeties, Sark moved Fellner and Stevenson to LB.

Fellner and Stevenson sucked at LB with Fellner disappearing and Stevenson graduating and wanting to return to Hawaii. I'm sure Petersen talked to him about staying but his heart was set on Hawaii, especially since he knew he probably wouldn't see too much of the field with Beaver, Walker and King all earning playing time last year.

Typically safeties are not that size so yes it is a concern. They are more built like corners.

There is definitely a track record of true freshman and underclassmen players messing up their shoulders or upper body from playing too early and having it hinder their playing time or development later. When you have a shoulder surgery and can't lift a ton of weights in the off season it can create an ongoing issue.

Developing people into players > always starting true freshmen but right now you gotta play with the hand you're dealt. I am hoping this changes in a year or two.
 
It's the lather-rinse-repeat cycle that has to stop. In future years, I hope (and suspect) Peterman will be mature and forward-thinking enough to resist the temptation to continually play true frosh whose bodies aren't yet prepared for the punishment of the college game.

Yes, at least one of the current batch of true frosh DBs is likely to suffer a career-limiting injury this year. It's a pattern we all know too well.
