Sark's "championships"

From the start, Sarkisian made it clear that he didn’t think it would take long to turn the program around and get it back to the high level of success that UW football has enjoyed throughout its history.

I love this in the Sarkisian bio. Too bad nobody in our media will dare bring this up to him when UW limps through another average season in year five.
 
But of course, I guess I should have known that Sark and UW now count regular season wins as championships.

Worse still, the AD that he bullshitted into to getting the position still lets his mediocrity slide. A REAL AD at a REAL football school would have fired Sark already.

Me neither. In fact, it was a very inspirational quote at the time. One that told everyone how much Sark "got it". A lot of people still buy into that shit, just because he said it back then. It's just an example of how badly everyone wanted to believe in Sark as a savior of the program, and many still do. One of the biggest houses on campus put that quote in front of everyone's faces on a day to day basis, and it was bound to sink in.

What happened next? FREE PUB! at the Rose Bowl with USC and a bunch more talk about "getting it", breath of fresh air...yadda yadda

Those of us who had seen the same irrational exuberance over Gilby (return to tuff Husky football) and Ty (Molder of men), thought maybe rather than lather..rinse..repeat, we would wait to see if an unproven hire (after we were led to believe a bigger name hire was going to be made) would be worth a shit.

Sharing that opinion on dm.com led to being attacked. Being attacked led to fighting back and eventually mocking the doogs for blindly buying the bullshit for the 3rd time in a row. I was perma-banned on 2/3/2009, essentially for shitting on the Sark parade and saying that we've been here before and should be skeptical until proven otherwise. (That and not being funny after 23 times, being 5% as creative as Race, and a little bit of my act going a long ways and getting way past a little)

4 years later, that proof hasn't come in any meaningful way.

Fixed it up. Which is the problem. We handed the car keys to an AD who had never been an AD before, we handed the car keys to a guy who had only been an OC for 2 years, we handed the car keys to a DC who never called plays during the games. Only at Idaho where he bombed did he call the plays.

Total reckless moves by Emmert who had one foot out the door anyways so why the fuck should he care?

*********** is right. Not everyone was thrilled with the hire. In fact I think many were at least initially disappointed. After a decent showing against LSU and then beating USC, I think a lot of folks were starting to believe there may be light at the end of the tunnel. But then losses started mounting, many of which were due to game day errors by the best play caller in the country and doubts crept back in.

By now it should be clear to anyone with half a brain (or more) that the odds of this guy really turning things around are slim at best. Face it, O-line recruiting has pretty much blown since he's been here and last year the offense was generally terrible ... and yet, not one coach of consequence on that side of the ball was fired OR replaced. That in itself is telling.

We'll see what happens this year, but I expect more of the same. Some decent performances at home followed by shitting all over themselves on the road and the obligatory three or so plunger rapings.

If you've got an hour to kill, go listen to the HHB podcast "Introducing Random Coach" in December 2008. You'll see what the general sentiment was in real time, recorded the day Sark was hired.

All of that may be true, but let's not act like the issue doesn't exist outside of the confines of the internet.

My point was that we one of the biggest frats on campus was putting that quote out there from the beginning, and barking all over campus about how great Sark was going to be, before his tenure had even begun. Just. Like. Dawgman. It is no coincidence that the Betas had Sark and other UW admins giving speeches at their house. It is no coincidence that they are one of the big money houses on campus.

All I am saying is that Kim and pals are a symptom, not a root cause. I'm just giving you another example of a symptom. It is the marketing approach to propping up our football program that pisses me off so much, and that happens on all fronts. You don't need to pump up a coach in order to boost ticket sales, you need a coach that can pump up the program with the product on the field.
