Paopao should have recruited another TE or two. We are thin there right now. The ones we have are good tho.
Boner’s churning out good RB’s. I don’t really care who they missed out on before Newton. I don’t care that ahmed was a lay up. Newton was offered early and is good. The ones after Newton will be good.
Recruits don’t often come to a school for a position coach. It’s part of it and being a good salesman does help.

Sure, position coaches don't matter, this is why Petermen and Kawasaki made a huge deal and accommodation to retain Jimmy Lake.

This is too far the other way. Position coaches absolutely matter.
Pease and Lubick have absolutely hurt our team with their inability to recruit. Adams and the program itself saved our ass to an extent by geting Puka. The recruiting at that position has been so bad that we are unbalanced on the roster with as many scholarships we have used to try to make up for how bad the talent has been there.
Strausser seemed to be a great coach but worthless as a recruiter and was canned for it.
Lake has been an excellent coach and pretty good recruiter, but early entries and two injuries at safety (Irvin and Joyner) have us vunerable there. If we had Pola Mao that year we missed him our secondary would look a lot different.
Gregory is a great coach but can't relate to players/recruit very well from what it seems. The fact that we had to take so many linebackers last year because of the gap in years at that position is another problem. Kaho was a weird situation, but EIfler leaving is a big deal right now that they couldn't get him ready to play.
Tight End is great right now, if Bryant or Otton get hurt this year not so much because we like to use two or three at a time and Pete is obviously pissed about it. We may be limited in the packages we can run.
I agree the TBS'ers overstate certain things sometimes but right now our Linebacker, Safety and WR issues are pretty embarrassing for a program that has spent the past 3 years in the top 15 in the country with USC and UCLA simultaneously trying to run their programs into the ground.
Safety i understand to an extent with the early entries and timely injuries, but you are not going to win a conference title with the glaring roster holes we have right now and it year 6 with Pete. This is due roster mismanagement. If we weren't blowing so many Schollies on WR's to make up for the incompetence of Pease and Lubick maybe we hit on another safety recruit one of those years or we hit on a linebacker (probably not with Gregory running point) but it is important.
As a 37 year old i forgot how important it was because we sucked for so long, then you play Bama, Penn State, and Ohio State and just see how those programs reload. We will probably never recruit like bama or ohio state consistently, but we should be able to match penn state, michigan and similar teams in that next tier. I would never expect a program like that to be starting Cam Williams as a true freshman and Myles Bryant out of position as safeties int he same secondary. Kyler Manu as a linebacker or 3 situational WR's at best as your starting trio. This has more to do with the assistant coaches and their recruiting. It is not the only thing that matters (See Mora's staff at UCLA), but it is really important.

Nobody is acting like we are RBU. It’s just not a problematic position. If Bama or Saquan Barkley is the standard, then we suck at almost every position. Gaskin was a favorite but he’s behind those guys too.
I simply think Newton is going to be very good. Ahmed has played well the last two games too. Sunday will be a monster too. You guys are too stuck on ratings. Good players are good players and we have them at RB.

It’s not a problematic position because there are a million guys that can do fine on a good team with good blocking. Great, we have a couple of them. Maybe. We certainly don’t have a stable.
But yes Zeke Elliott, Saquon Barkley, Derrick He Ray, Damien Harris, Travis Etienne are the standard. We are trying to win national championships here not lose to Cal.
Yes, Ahmed and Newton played a large role in that loss.
Newton wasn’t the first choice, but he was an early offer. We got him and he’s good.
If he was a 4 or 5 star that was recruited by everyone, this narrative wouldn’t exist or at least would be less of an issue. That’s why it’s stupid. Newton is probably better than a lot of guys you had higher on your wish lists. Spin away.

There weren't a number of guys higher than Newton on the wish list because there weren't any RBs on the west coast that year.
Newton isn't the problem.
The problem, if there is one, is that Boner consistently doesn't want to go toe to toe with the heavyweights for the best guys. I think it's fair to say he's lazy.
Giving up on Austin Jones when we did was indefensible, especially when he couldn't close Charbonnet.
Running back is a highly overrated position anyway so this is mostly wasted hysteria. But you'd still rather get the best guys, and Boner doesn't appear willing to do what it takes to do that.
He's a good RB coach though, but again, RB coach is a highly overrated position.

I guess to a degree but at the same time when I see how USC's running backs can change the game with literally ever rock they carry I know that having a top quality running back is incredibly valuable. It's weird to me how USC constantly recruits top running backs and then barely uses them as they make every game plan their QB and young receivers. I'd simply hand off to guys like Carr 30 times a game.
