Round 1 - #7 Queen vs #10 The Police

I'm not a huge Queen fan (have their greatest hits cd somewhere collecting dust), but they had staying power. They were successful and putting out not shitty music from the mid 70s to about 1990. The Police always seemed overrated to me. My brother thought Sting was great for some reason though.

Agree on Police but Queen is damn near the perfect band to me. They have multiple members who make all of the "greatest of" lists, including my choice for greatest frontman ever (a fucking Parsee from Zanzibar, no less), along with a fucking astrophysicist who happens to a guitar virtuoso. They put out hits in a number of different styles, including two arena rock anthems that every sports loving kid falls in love with at an early age. I'd argue they're closer to top 7 all time than a 7 seed. Really, really good band IMO.

I'm a sucker for a band that you can listen to something they made and say "that's (insert band here)??" Queen were the masters of that. The first times I heard Fat Bottomed Girls or Crazy Little Thing Called Love or Bohemian Rhapsody I never would have guessed the same band I knew from We Are The Champions and We Will Rock You. Legends.

Queen really is under appreciated. Freddy Mercury had arguably one of the best voices in rock, ever. The guy could sing anything impressively, including Opera. Totally agree on Brian May, he is brilliant, a true virtuoso.

I last saw Brian May play live with Paul Rodgers on the Return of the Champions Tour as Queen with Paul Rodgers. Roger Taylor, Spike Edney, Danny Miranda (from BOC) and Jamie Moses rounded out the band. Two things really hit home. The quality of the musicianship was stellar, across the board, and Paul fucking Rodgers fails to age, he sounded great even if his voice doesn't fit Queen's songs, I mean who can replace Freddy Mercury doing a Queen song? They made up for that by playing some Bad Company tunes, and IMO actually improved on "Hammer to Fall" with May and Rodgers doing the vocals.

Anyway, Cheers Queen Fan! Totally understood.

Edit: IMO, Freddy Mercury had one of the best voices in rock ever, but that is not to say that he had the best rock voice. IMO, that is debatable but goes to the more "bluesy" voices. Guys like Robert Plant and Chris Cornell.

Holy Diver is ear melting awesomeness. Fuck. Can't believe three of the four of these guys are dead and the other one had throat cancer. REAL GOD is really fucking with me.

Cornell obviously had the better range but Layne is my favorite grunge era voice.

I agree. Only four spots on Mount Rushmore, which makes it tuff. Bon Scott, Layne, Maynard Keenan didn't make the cut.
