I'm usually not the type to bag on an individual player, but since these are professional mercenaries now, and I have nothing better to do while recovering from neck surgery, fuck it. This is a post for the Rogers defenders to help illustrate why some of us might be extremely frustrated with him in spite of decent "numbers" on the season. I don't have a copy of the game to to a gifskinz style breakdown, but just the box score lines are pretty damning. Below is a catalog of what Rogers did on impact plays against USC. By "impact," I mean plays that could extend a drive or plays in the red zone. Plays in bold are successful plays (although this is just a box score, so it's possible some of these successes couldn't have been bigger plays that were checked down from).
Rogers was 4-14 on impact plays. This kind of shallow analysis is already damning, but the actual film was so much worse. The manner in which a lot of these plays failed is just incredibly frustrating. On at least two of these plays, the target was WIDE open for the 1st down (how do you overthrow a 6'7" guy that's only 12 yards downfield?). On two, we yet again see completions a yard short of the sticks. The two point conversion fade is just inexcusable. It's a fucking free untimed down; the only thing you can't do is put the ball out of play. An interception is the same as incomplete, just give your 6'4" receiver a chance.
The hate for Browning but acceptance of Rogers around here is one of the biggest mysteries of the universe to me. When picturing the ultimate big-balls QB plays, NOBODY thinks of a guy taking a shotgun snap and immediately hitting a slant route, which seems to be all Rogers is capable of doing. He's so inaccurate when throwing on the run that even shifting a bit in the pocket is a recipe for a lame duck throw. And even some of the completions in this game were ones where I thought, "Man, if that's actually on target, there's another 10 or more yards in YAC."
Fisch can be fucking retarded with play calling and situational awareness—the last play on the above list is a great example of that, risking a clock stoppage to throw a sideways pass when the defense is sitting on the LOS—but this team has a completely different record with even a 2018 Browning level QB behind center. At least give me somebody who's accurate out to 25 yards and can throw on the run when the patchwork OL breaks down. Or somebody that presents a running threat and keeps the LBs and safeties honest.
