My thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family in this tragic time.

I'm sure they'll appreciate the thoughts and prayers of an atheist.

I've done a scientific study and found that the thoughts and prayers of an atheist are answered at the exact same rate as thoughts and prayers of a believer, which in turn are answered at the same rate as someone who doesn't pray, but instead just shits into his hand and wipes his feces on the wall (before shoving them down his throat and playing football)
