The older M16 used to be a problem for left handed shooters because of the way the brass ejected. Guys would get hot brass on their face so the Army bought an attachment to deflect the brass for lefties.

I got warned time and again in basic to use the deflector and so I did religiously.

I ended up out on a range in 20 degree weather spotting for another shooter. The brass from his rifle got my face and because it was cold, I didn’t even notice. Left a nice little scar for a couple months.
